A recent post about the ebb and flow of Oppo contributor s over the years had me thinking back to when I first started posting here. Back then, Oppo and the FP were much more connected and Oppo was kinda like the after work bar for FP regulars to post and discuss most anything that they felt like. Quite often the high effort posts got shared to the FP. It was very rare and quite the achievement.

Over the years Oppo has morphed into, well, whatever this is now. I love it. So in the spirit of nostalgia , post up a link to your first Oppo post that you published.

I am one of the newest regular contributors around here, with my first post being way back in early December of 2019 (that was a different world).

I started off strong I think, and I haven’t looked back. I wasn’t around for the gradual separation of the FP but I could see people becoming less enamored with it by the day, myself included.

Oppo’s current form is much like it was when the forum first started in 2010(?), an off topic forum for Jalopnik readers/commenters. In fact, it was simply called ‘off-topic’ before it was oppositelock.

The time you joined was peak Kinja as it was originally designed - a blogging platform meant to encourage sharing and cross posting content from different places and authors. The effect it had on Oppo, turning it in-part into a stage to try out/launch one’s own writing was a product of that willingness to share reader content. While that effect lingers, the powers that be put a stop to directly sharing content from non-staff several years ago now and Oppo has largely returned to its intended purpose.

I think your description of 2014 as being peak Kinja is spot on.  I didn’t do a good job in the OP to convey the nuances to the change over the years but your perspective fills in the picture I tried to paint.

Ok, I have been around here a little while, but there are still terms that are thrown out that I can’t figure out. Maybe a generational thing, what is the FP? Jalopnik?

Thanks, I went out one October crisp afternoon to shoot the Roadster and found a pretty nice spot in a park with abandoned campsites.

I came across Jalopnik and Oppo fairly late in the game; my first post was just a year and a half ago, although it feels much much longer ago .

I was so excited to get to write about my favorite  topic I almost forgot to include a photo with it.

I don’t know how to get to my earliest post, but I think it was in 2013 or so. Definitely different now than it was then, but it’s still good. There are lots of places I poke around and some I post in, but Oppo feels like home.
