I really like these cutaway draw ings, but sometimes they draw attention to the strangest things. Surely “protective inner fenders front and rear” were not exactly a unique feature. That said, my car (now without power steering, sigh) is missing one and is fine.
There was also an asterisk about easier chassis lubing but that wasn’t included. I’m curious.

Man, say what you want about the 70's, but you gotta admit they had some really fun stripe and appearance packages back then... What happened to the world that we can’t have fun appearance packages for cars anymore? Since when did people become too serious for that stuff?

Kind of a reflection of the era. Boomers were coming into their own, and even with the economic maladies of the era, it wasn’t nearly as dark as today. There was reason to be optimistic (affordable housing/education/healthcare/socio-economic mobility/family wage jobs right out of high school/ modern infrastructure etc) Cars were seen as fun, and the colors reflected it. Even unexciting cars could be had in colors, inside and out, seen as wild today.
Today, as the timeline grows darker and dumber, I suspect cars will become more beigegrey with more leering eyes and angry faces, as the faux-aggression supposedly will protect the driver.

Shame there’s apparently no kits for a ‘76 Camero, I’d love to have a go at that. This’ll have to do:

I really like that Rally Sport paintjob...I also really wish cars came in brighter more interesting colors...the little Mitsubishi Mirage is one of the few I can think of that actually had a lot of interesting color options in the last few years...

Oddly, it makes me want a 70's car like this even more, as a sort of counterculture.

I guess that’s why I like more basic cars...they often seem to be a bit brighter and more cheerfully styled than the moody darkness a lot of larger cars have....
Well-written comment, take your star :)

1000% agree....cars have such bland and boring
color options nowadays with a few standouts. Everything is mostly silver, white, black, maybe some red...but very few interesting stripe packages or vibrant colors anymore...and two-tone! Two-tone paint looks cool! Not much of that anymore either...

The wild “leering” (good word choice) mugs of the bloated blobs on the road today make me almost as angry as they look. What I just don’t understand is how serious everyone takes their cars.
Why does the Chevy Equinox need to look pretentious in addition to resembling a drunk cross eyed hippopotamus? A bad car that also takes itself seriously is much worse than a bad car that appears carefree. Think about how much worse the Mirage would be if it only came in gray and silver and looked angry instead of mildly perturbed .

Interestingly, I just discovered you can still buy the stripe kit for the Rally Sport ‘76 Camaro. https://www.stencilsandstripes.com/product/1975-77-chevrolet-rally-sport-camaro-decal-and-stripe-kit/
And I found a Scout with fun stripes for sale as well...

As terrible as it is, I really like the lime green and purple colors the Mirage used to come in, haha! Or that lime green and hilarious bright orange
the Dodge Dart used to come in...
I just like the fact they add a cool splash of color wherever they are, and who doesn’t need a splash of color now and then :)

That’s awesome! I want to take that same stripe kit from the Camaro and apply it to a completely un-Camaro like car...imagine a black Citroen 2CV with yellow rims and that stripe kit! :D

Thanks :)
Cheaper cars can be more “cheerful” as they make fewer false pretenses, as least so long as they are cars and not bloatling CUVs.
But back in that day, even more expensive cars could be fun in terms of hues . Want an orange MB sedan with a caramel colored interior? Done. Purple Rolls-Royce with a turquoise interior? No problem. Yellow Sedan Deville? Permission granted.

That would be awesome, though I imagine you’d have to change the proportions of the stripe kit quite a lot to make it fit on a 2cv, lol.

There’s a lot of “get out of my way” in modern car design, I think. The menacing glares existed for a couple years in the late 50s when overstyling peaked, then receded, until now, when overstyling is again a trend as “stylists” have reached desperation. Add the rugged cosplay of a CUV into it, and it is off the hook.
Good point about the Mirage. They should all be red or yellow or sky blue, and have a grille/bumper with a smirking or smiling “face”. Toyota especially puts the menacing glare on everything, including the smallest slowest cars. It’s ridiculous. I thought the smiling Mazda3 was dopey for a long time, and it still is silly, but at least it isn’t trying to be something it isn’t. It’s a relatively cheap and cheerful car.

You know me. I live for a splash of color. I wouldn’t want a Mirage in a serious and pretentious grayscale color. For instance there is a two door Geo Metro hatchback I always see around and it is unapologetically teal, which somehow makes it OK.
Hilarious and OK
Pretentious and boring (my my are those so tiny in person)

One of my uncles had a rally sport with the spoiler like awesomeaustinv posted. I had a chance to ride in it when I was visiting (we lived in a different state) . The thing I remember the most about that car was the transmission. There was something wrong and it wasn’t shifting properly. It would rev up real high and then kick like a mule when it shifted. I was sick during that visit and riding in that car made me feel terrible.
Perhaps it was just the malaise.

Yes, they were simple basic transportation where the cars looks like its having as much fun as you will. There is something to be said for that association. Brighter colors also tend to help with the cheerful and fun look.
I mean just look at this boring dark gray Versa
Compared to this more brightly colored and slightly less pretentious hatchback. Which looks more carefree?

If I had a choice between a Versa sedan and Note, I’d pick the hatch every time.

I do love my some bright blues...
I think my favorite bright blue was ‘Brilliant Blue Metallic’ that Chrysler offered on the Neon, Dodge Dakota and Dodge Durango back in the mid-late ‘90s!

Hahaha, yeah........build quality and performance were not up to par with the styling packages and colors :P
I wonder...could one make a business out of making replica vinyl kits for classic styling packages but for modern versions of a car?
For random examples: that Rally Sport stripe kit but for the modern Camaro....? Or say...a
Citroen 2CV ‘Beachcomber’ stripe kit
, but for something like the modern Citroen C3?

I had a teacher with a Durango exactly that shade. That was a good blue. I have a friend with a Durango painted that sort of dark purple too, which also looks good.

That design has aged well and will probably be sought after in the future considering the survival rate in restorable condition (weird to say, right?)
Oh, and apparently the Accent came in a nice blue because that’s what color it was in Knives Out (I rewatched recently)

I have that film on my list to watch, and yup, that color on the Accent is ‘Dark Sapphire Blue Pearl’! :)
It was a fairly common color, but the blue/gray on mine was more common!

Dark blues look classy on almost anything.
This color in particular is deeply sparkly yet subtle.
But as always, green is just sublime.
And since my new phone camera misrepresents Autumn Metallic, I always have to end with. . .
Why don’t car companies do multiple good colors anymore? Subtle color is especially great. I once parked to make the complete trio of good Cruze colors next to each other but somehow I didn’t take a picture.

Yeah, my old Subaru was ‘Savannah Green Metallic’ and it looked gorgeous when the sun hit it:
I also quite like almost-black paint shades that have a purple metallic tint to them...they are pretty cool as well!

That green is indeed very fine. Is that your photo? I like the water streams.
Almost black but slightly colored cars are always classy and subtle without jumping to stand out, which makes me think that they will be the next big trend in a world where any color at all is rare.

And better proportions. It’s extremely difficult to design a subcompact with a trunk and not have it look unbalanced.

I do not! No plugs on the house near where the cars park, weirdly, but I’ve never needed one as long as the battery is decent. The worst it gets in terms of temperature here in the winter is maybe the mid -20's C (including windchill) nowhere near the crazy -30s and -40s they get in the Prai
ries!
