My one 16-year-old friend was SHOCKED when I told him this, as he’s getting his license soon . I mean, if colleges are doing crazy crap like no SAT’s, this doesn’t surprise me haha.

At least in TX the aspiring driver needs to complete 30 hours of graduated driving, with each session signed by a licensed parent/guardian. This is nuts.

In more positive Corona news, TX governor Greg Abbott has said that take home and delivery of alcohol will likely remain in place .

It’s like they looked at their neighbor SC, saw that they had the 2nd worst drivers in the US based on deaths, accidents, dui’s, and citations(Possibly due to the lack of required Driver’s Ed) , then took inspiration from the state that started the Civil War.

Reminds me of when a friend of mine moved from Seattle to Atlanta. His car insurance virtually doubled.

He lasted ~5 years and ran home.

I will move back to Florida before I would move to Georgia. I’ve lived on all three sides and have had to cross it far too many times. It’s truly awful, and I've crossed Ohio west to east.

I am continually impressed and disappointed by the utter incompetence in Brian Kemp . Speaking solely on the driving aspect, I’m convinced Georgia has the worst drivers in the nation, and I’ve lived in both Alabama and Louisiana, two states with notoriously shitty drivers. Driving through Atlanta is already a nightmare; adding in inexperienced and incompetent drivers will only serve to makes matters worse. Now seems like a good time to get a city beater; I don't need any of my cars being destroyed because a 16-year-old rear-ended me because she was taking a selfie behind the wheel.

Statistically speaking, I don’t know where GA sits, but SC is #2 worst based on fatalities, accidents, duis, and other infractions, while Maine is #1.

How it this a thing in America? Very few states or counties have actual tests (multiple choice theory and practical) but this is a massive low . Especially after a post of:-

Which is passing the buck of road safety and driver training onto the government and manufacturers to make the vehicles safer in an incident on pedestrians (in this case) . Drivers should be tested to a national standard by a trained examiner.

Yes the U.S. doesn’t have the same crash safeties as the E.U. and Japan but first surely you start by training the operator to use the machine.

Hell we don’t have overly strict driving tests here in the U.K. but you have to take driving lessons, pass your multiple choice theory test then a practical on the road driving test with an examiner and show your knowledge on how to maintain a vehicle (changing a tyre, filling up the water and oil and tyres with air) . Hell new licence holders need to sit a test and pass to get an endorsement to be added to their driving licence to say they can pull a trailer.

I feel like those statistics aren’t related to the size of vehicles, I would attribute them more to vehicles requiring less attention to drive in general. Not only are modern trucks much easier to control, they also stop a lot quicker than they used to. This article is typical “I’m scared, this is bad.”  The Ram 1500 I regularly drive has much better visibility than my Fiesta had. After my crash, until truckers(big rigs)are fully automated, I completely understand wanting a larger vehicle. They are by far the worst drivers on the road.

There’s all these sys tems, etc... in cars these days to help reduce getting into incidents, and reducing fatalities when they occur but there’s less emphasis on training and not getting into the incident in the first place.

Well that’s not good. They could at least do a simulated driver’s test. Or a test where the instructor follows along. Something.

I visited my friend a few times there (Atlanta suburbs). I thought it was OK to visit (good eating) , but I didn’t have to live there.  Cheap housing anyway, but location location location.

My theory is that Governor Kemp plans to show a chart of COVID deaths after the premature reopening as a per capita rate compared to the rate of traffic deaths and claim the comparative downward trend as a victory on the assumption that nobody will actually look at the numbers.

Insurance is always sky high in states like Maine because nature is rather hard to file suit against.  No accidents, tickets, or claims on your record and you still pay out the nose.  Be interesting to see if Georgia sees increased rates despite the low traffic numbers and shortness of trips.

The cities of Ohio aren’t bad places to be (not great either), but this state is ROUGH to drive across! Sorry, not sure what we did wrong to make that happen, but I promise we hate it too!

I grew up driving in Atlanta (actual Atlanta, not ‘burbs) , so when I get to those other “hot spot bad traffic” cities it’s like... I’m home, these are my people. We have an understanding.

Now I live in semi-rural Minnesota and I am BY FAR the most aggressive driver here

So I think this is a terrible idea, but it’s temporary and how many teens get their license under this law isn’t going to be too many, a dro p in the bucket of all the drivers in Georgia. The bad ones who lied will lose their license eventually.
