Snowy owl is not impressed.
A few months ago, there were rumors that Lego would be making a buildable Hedwig set for the Harry Potter line. You might not know this, but I have a bit of an obsession with owls. So naturally, I was excited by the idea of having a big Lego snowy owl model. Well, Lego just revealed it, and OH LORD HAVE MERCY.
That... that face... It’s so pointy... Owls’ faces aren’t freaking 90 degree angles! They are a little bit pointy, yes, but only a LITTLE BIT. Ri ght angle = wrong angle. This just looks wrong, like uncanny valley this-is-freaking-me-out wrong. Owl eyes should not be looking in two different directions!!! Now, credit where credit is due, this is a mechanical model of a snowy owl and has wings that flap when you turn a crank, which is a cool feature I wasn’t expecting, and for a mechanical model it’s impressively detailed. They managed to capture the snowy owl’s plumage surprisingly well., and the wings look believable enough. I like automata models and kinetic sculp tures and whatnot, so I’ll be interested to see how the mechanism works. That said, the mechanical aspect of it meant that they had to make compromises, some of which make the bird look... awkward from some angles.
That is one chonky bird...

I wonder if the LEGO masters winners design had something to do with this kit
It’ s basically a copy of the gryphon design that won

Yeah, I think all they had to do was look at that minfig owl (which I assume was from previous Harry Potter sets) and see that their big owl doesn’t look too much like that.

Unfortunately, LEGO hasn’t had an original thought in a couple of decades.

Man, I want to watch that show. I’ll get around to it sooner or later...

I think that one actually worked out pretty well... Not an easy car to build out of Lego for sure, but using fairly simple techniques, they managed to pull it off.

I love that gif! What is it from?

I mean, it looks good if you take your glasses off?

I disagree. They still occasionally create new original themes, and the Creator line is still going strong with plenty of imaginative sets, like this burger monster food truck thing:

Just saying, some things translate to LEGO better than others.
(and yes, I did just buy a couple more LEGO sets just now...)

I think my Hedwig Brickhead looks better than that.

Just out of curiosity, I googled “ Lego owl” and this popped up:
I’d say that’s pretty darn good, actually... And this model was built several years ago with not too many fancy parts, so this new Hedwig set could’ve been very detailed, but the 90-degree head and the compromises made for the sake of the mechanical bits made it one of the derpier Lego owls I’ve seen.

Definitely. Even with the brickhhead being stylized, it at least doesn’t look derpy. Why why why of why did the designer decide to build the head with a right angle...
