Kinja'd!!!

Yesterday came t he highly-anticipated arrival of my Harbor Freight jack . I ordered this on Monday, March 30th. I am fine with the timing, because COVID I’m sure, but I would have used it several times by now, so I’m psyched to get it into action for the coming brake jobs on both our cars. Yes, somehow, my wife’s 2015 Mini wore through its rear brake pads in just 45,000 miles - and it’s not her, I can tell you that. She went 140,000 miles on the original brakes on her 2005 Volvo S40, and even at that mileage they weren’t unsafe, just “due.” Our 2012 XC70 has around 122,000 miles; I’m almost certain these aren’t the original brakes, but in any case they’re looking quite worn.

Whatever, brakes are easy. And with this thing, I should be able to get the Mini up NO problem whatsoever. M ore importantly, I’ll be able to lift the Volvo adequately without using wood blocks (yikes). I regret not buying two larger jack stands; somehow I only have one. I can still lift a car safely, but I’ll keep an eye out for the inevitable sales that will be coming.

I believe a lot of modern cars engage the rear brakes first because it adds a feeling of stability. If you’re generally light on the brakes you may not use the fronts much at all.

The rears on my WRX were gone after 40k km while the fronts probably had 40-50% left on the pads. Granted, there were extenuating circumstances (a fair bit of autocross and they got very rusty sitting for 5 weeks when I broke my ankle at the end of winter 2 years ago, which took considerable clutch abuse to free up), but the difference in wear was still notable. I took the opportunity to upgrade the pads and swapped the rotors so we’ll see if they hold up longer than the OE stuff (probably will, considering I autocross my other car now).

I dont remember if your wife’s Mini is a 1st gen or not but it probably has an integrated handbrake and requires a special-ish tool to rotate the piston to retract it.

Was not sure if you were aware of it...

Very interesting. I would have intuited that the fronts would wear more. But she’s definitely pretty light on the brakes, mostly because she commutes ~40 miles on a highway with only very light traffic. The Volvo she had when she was commuting twice a week about 120 miles each way, plus it was a manual.

hmm, it’s an F56 (second-gen?) - 2015. I should look up any special procedures, though , before I attempt to pull the rotor off.

My 2013 Outback with stability control kills rear brake pads too, like every 35,000 miles, it’s insane. Lucky they are pretty easy to replace.

Interesting to hear about the Mini’s rear brakes. And the WRX, Outback. I have a Transit and people bitch about rear brakes going twice as fast as the fronts (especially since the axles have to be pulled for rotor replacement).

Theories include proportioning valves are set to prevent nose dive (possibly desir able in a cargo van? ) and the traction control which the Wind Stabilization feature (it gets a workout in CO and WY ) works through.

Yep, this is the TC/ESC grabbing brakes on individual wheels to stop wheel spin and oversteer (usually the outside rear wheel gets grabbed first). I always turn both systems fully off in the WRX if I’m driving on snow/gravel, which is most days , ostensibly to reduce brake wear, but mostly so it’ll let me slide the car.

I’ve turned off the traction control but it still seems to intrude and it is not fully turned off... There must be a way, maybe just pull the fuse.

On mine I hold the button for 5 seconds, a single press only turns off TC and leaves the esc on. Hopefully the Ou tback isn’t more restrictive.

My Mazda3 used to burn up the rears and my Volvo got new rears at 39k right before I took delivery but none of my MINIs burned up the rears that much.

I’m putting new fronts on my 2013 R56 this afternoon because they started pulsing a bit about a year after I replaced them before and it’s annoying.

I should get a bigger jack for my 4500lb Jaguar.

yup, thanks for the heads up. It looks like you could use a needlenose plier or something, though it would be tedious. I am going to order the one he used, ~$10 on amazon.

Needle nose pliers are possible but its quite difficult to rotate the piston initially (at least it was on mine), i wasn’t able to budge it using a plier

I could see that. I’ll wait until I get the tool in to attempt this. No rush, the pads have plenty of material, and my wife’s been driving the Volvo half the time (any time it’s rainy, because her old, worn out runflats are shit in the rain). In fact I’m thinking of selling the factory 17's and getting a set of 16's for summer, too (that’s what we have for winter). Our roads are just not that great for running tires that thin and stiff.
