It disturbs me how expensive these malaise era cars are getting. I remember everyone having one of these in high school (circa 00) as they were practically free and gas was still cheap.

It also disturbs me how much I want something like a MK V...

TBH I think the price is a bit high. It has low miles but how much of the rubber under the hood is shot right now? Probably not a reliable cruiser.

Even the downsized Town Car that replaced it, I had issues getting mine onto a flatbed tow truck. Driver had to improvise a bit with some plywood and wood blocks and it still scraped.

I ended up with an 84 Grand Marquis that belonged to my wife’s great grandmother and it was wallowy as hell, but pretty decent on the highway and the 302 while quite slow got something like 17 mpg on the highway.

what’s worse is that Cadillac’s 8.2 liter (500 cu. in.) V8 from the year prior only made 190 hp.

I’d nitpick with the seller on the phrase “all the options”. This car does not have all the options because my father’s ‘77 Town Car did have have “all the options”. What’s missing?

Leather Seating, CB Radio with retractable antenna, Turbine-type alloy wheels.

Now, this isn’t a bad car. I dig the styling, and the ride was really nice. What wasn’t so nice was the handling. The power is way down on these. This car will not spin a tire on dry ground under any circumstance. The engine can be made a bit livelier by stripping off some of the vacuum advance control that they used to keep emissions down and mileage up. (I did that on my dad’s 460, and he even noticed how much better it was. Just bypass all the thermostatic vacuum valves and the like and it does help.)

Anyhow, its cool to see this car. It’s pretty much identical to the one I learned to drive on except of course missing the stuff I mentioned above. I think Dad sold it for $1500 in the late 80s.

Yeah, but everything’s so half-assed. I mean, half-assed was the name of the game from the start, right? But now we’re half of that. So quarter-assed. Finnegan’s Garage is okay, but not the old vibe. And at the end of any of it, whatever they cobble together is destined for scrap or storage and not anything you or I might putz around with in our garage.
