As much as we enjoy driving the new Subaru Outback Onyx XT, we still have many questions. Such as, how does the CVT do over time when the vehicle is off-roaded regularly? And, how does dual X-Mode handle a large variety of conditions? In this week’s show, Ryan introduces Driving Sports TV’s new long-term Onyx XT and sets off on an inaugural adventure!

How much on-roadness does it give up to be as off-roady as it is?

That’s really the nice thing about the Outback. It’s great on-road . We’ll cover more of that in a future episode as well.

Also thank you for getting an actual color rather than some beige-silver that seems so popular on outbacks

AFAIK its basically a normal Outback with some different trim and a fancier software off-roading mode. So it would ride on road as well as any other Outback.

Oh I know the Onyx is only a simple trim. As I understand it the Onyx isn’t that different from other trims as far as hardware.
I was more going for the “how is the outback on the scale of excellent off-road vs on road”. Kind of like how I would expect a Wrangler Rubicon to be abysmal on a road trip compared to an Outback the same as I wouldn’t take an Outback on the Rubicon trail. But the better indication, to me, is how far the vehicle creeps to either end of the scale like can the Outback be “good enough” on road to make up for it’s deficiencies off-road vs a Wrangler/4 Runner/etc.
