It’s always the biggest, strongest, fattest, most promising lambs...

Had to euthanize one today. I’m not sure WHAT exactly he did, but I found him flailing on the ground next the fence, paralyzed below the shoulders... no movement in the tail or hind legs and no pain response. :P N ot sure sure how, but he broke his back... had to shoot him. He was probably close to 60lbs already, and beefy and handsome. We had some buyers interested in him for breeding, and even if they decided not to buy him, at his current growth rate he was set to be a profitable carcass.

Poop.

At least I’m really good at hitting the brain on the fir st try now...

That's. . . worrying. Better do a careful inspection for sharp fence bits and other hazards, but seems like a freak thing. Too bad.

Yeah, nothing obvious. He might have kicked up right next to it and got his foot c a ught in it or something.... I mean, he might also have pissed off a ewe who wasn’t his mother and gotten rammed into the fence by her... the barn cameras don’t cover the loafing yard, so I have only what I found to go on.

Big, strong, and dumb often leads to injury, but then again freak stuff happens that no one can predict. We had a giraffe baby born to our zoo a few years back. It was a huge to do, and everyone celebrated.  Then, a few weeks in, he just slipped while cavorting in his pen and broke his neck.  Died right there. That kind of death always makes me sad in whatever animal.

That sucks, sorry.

But I am also reminded of a saying I learned from my mother, who grew up on a dairy farm, explaining the level of intelligence of a sheep. “If there are 100 horses in field during a thunderstorm, and one sheep, the sheep will get struck by lightning, twice, before any horse gets hit.” It doesn’t even make sense, but I found it both amusing and memorable, apparently.

I’m leaning towards the pissed off another much larger sheep explanation. Or doing  the deed himself.

Are 60 lb lambs good eating?

do you eat such a culling, or concerned about how it got paralyzed  too much to consume?

We would normally eat it, but it was rainy and getting late and I didn’t want to skin it... so I just buried the corpse in the manure pile. it was pretty clear that he was injured as opposed to diseased. There’s not a whole lot of meat on a lamb that size, so although it’s a bit wasteful, I was not in the mood to be frugal...

my father grew up on a dairy and then later sheep farm, as a result lamb is the traditional family holiday meal of fanciness.

That said, everytime I visited the farm I only remember him shooting rabbits and prepping and cooking those :D

SO. MANY. RABBITS.
