So in my backyard, there is wetlands and a pond of sorts. Not big. Maybe 40 feet by 40 feet. no idea on depth.
I was wondering if I can add some sort of fish to it so they eat mosquito larvae and you know... have fresh fish repository?
What are the rules for adding and then catching that fish?

Stocking fish on your own land is legal. I don’t see why you couldn’t catch the fish you stocked.

I think you need a permit so you don’t introduce an invasive species. Should be on your state wildlife page

Check with your local conservation officers, I imagine rules differ from every state.

Check with your state Conservation Department. Missouri will Come stock your lake or pond.

I would personally strongly advocate for not introducing species/animals into areas they are not natural to.

As others have said, contact your local dnr, they’ll hook you up with a hatchery to get you stocked.
But first, you need to know the depth and weather there is a fresh inflow and outflow. Fish won't thrive or even survive without water turnover.

Small mouth bass generally do well in that type of environment, and are a fun game fish.

Completely depends on your local jurisdiction, here it’s fair game on private property, no need for a license either. I imagine some states would differ.

If this is a regular water feature, your local city or county vector control folks will likely stock it with mosquito fish for you as a public health measure if you call them up and ask. That said, mosquito fish won’t provide you with much in the way sport fishing , unless you want to stand there and net them.

Probably should figure that out before you pay to stock it (unless you’re okay transferring them to another pond or lake if that turns out to be the case).
Is there any life in it at all? We have a 3/4 acre pond and it’s just TEEMING with life - bass, bluebill , minnows , crawfish, frogs, turtles, snakes - and the previous owners said they never stocked it. It’s just a drainage pond, too - not fed by a stream - but we do get a fair amount of rain here (more in recent years). Nature finds a way...
Sounds like you might want some of these little guys:

Not a fishing license but a license to stock the fish. Also the pond isn’t within his property

It might be spring fed.
Pond is too small for stocking or expecting to catch fish out of. Unless those fish are the size of minnows and you get out your 1.5" little kids fishing pole.

The pond could spread during a high rain fall flash flood situation.
That’s the reason for the pre-caution anyway.

Unless,
like Nom De Plume said, its spring fed, at a minimum you’ll need a pump and fountain
to turn the water over.

Research suggests that birds transport fish eggs on their feet, mouths and in vegetation
that they use to make nests. There are conflicting reports of birds actually pooping out viable eggs into other water ways. The DNR guys I’ve talked to, say that a new clean water pond that is not stocked will have fish within 2
years

approach. Get some fish and some ducks.

there is a boat load of frogs and few ducks that frequent the pond. I want to put some more ducks in it too. Wonder if ducks are territorial and thats why there is only 1 to 3 ducks in this pond. Wonder if they would battle?
Could potentially bet to see who would win the battle for partypooper2012 sea territory

There are 1-3 ducks that frequent the pond. Also about a billion frogs... or at least that’s what it sounds like.
Still tho. I want some fish in there

Can’t hurt putting a bunch of minnows (or mosquito fish) in there, but I’m wondering if bigger fish would make it. If there are frogs, that means they’ve got plenty to eat, so that’s a good sign.
Ducks are territorial (we’ve raised some before - rouens). Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the coyotes in the area finally got smart and started picking them off... The ducks you can buy to raise are meat ducks, and are are too fat to fly.

Any creeks nearby? They like to hang out in slow-moving eddies with lots of cover/vegetation. People use all kinds of things for bait: balled-up white bread, saltines, dog food...

This is a mystery body of water. No input. No output. Just a biiiig puddle. Similar to those on the street. I don’t know that any of these puddles have any fish in them. I do hear frogs though.

Just a low spot that manages to never (or very infrequently) dry out. Putting a solar fountain in it would improve survival chances for fish you add.

I am hypothesizing that the frogs living in this pond should in theory eat up the mosquito larvae.
This would absolve me of any responsibility for
introducing fish where fish did not exist.

We have incredibly few mosquitos out here. Between all the predators in our pond and the swallows and dragonflies, they don’t have a chance.
