Moved into our new place on Friday. My wife and I did the whole move ourselves. The logistics of hiring movers in a pandemic was too complicated, and we have plenty of free time anyway.

The Rover handled two heavy trailer loads without breaking a sweat. Granted we only moved two miles away and didn’t go above 25 mph. I would estimate the first load was close to 5,000 lbs. The trailer alone is 2,000.

She sqatin’

The second load was just furniture and the mattress up top. We saved $$$ by doing it ourselves but I’m still incredibly sore I’m also embarrassed at the sheer volume of things that we own at a fairly young age. I’ve always said I don’t want to be pack rats like my parents are. I think it’s beyond control at this point.

I know the moving feels, this last one is the only one I haven’t done myself (woo company paid relocation)

Embarrassing amount of stuff?  At 32 we had 26,000 lbs of “stuff” for the movers to deal with

I literally don’t want to move ever again because of this. We have an asinine amount of stuff. Our only saving grace is that we have fairly limited storage in our house so it sort of forces us to keep things somewhat sane. Even so, we have soooo much stuff and we too are fairly young.

I’ve moved something like 18 times. Only two were handled by movers. Both of those moves w ere over 250 miles and were paid for by a new employer . After those experiences, we decided to make the longest move ourselves. That one was 600 miles.

Sure, you’re sore after moving, but when you do it yourself you have a pretty good idea where all of your stuff can be found. When the movers were involved, we found bedroom stuff in kitchen boxes, kid’s stuff in bathroom boxes, etc. If they had finished a room but still had space in a box, they carried it to another room to finish filling it. :/

I like moving because it's such a wonderful opportunity to get rid of things

It was really satisfying to have control over the whole process. This was our first house purchase so I liked that we could be very careful to avoid wall dings and dents. We did a good job keeping everything nice as we brought stuff in.

I’ll be 32 next month, so I guess I’m on a good pace. We have a separate 10' x 10' storage unit that we still need to bring in though. It’s probably got another trailer’s worth in it. That’ s where all my tools and car parts are too.

You know you can still do that without moving, right?

Oh we purged what seemed like a lot of stuff. Since I’ve been unpacking, I’ve been starting a pile of “why the hell did I keep this”.

I was pretty upset that they dinged our refrigerator when they brought it into our new house. Sure, you can get “compensation” for the damage, but it’s not like anyone will repair it and the compensation isn’t enough for a new fridge.

Of course, doing it yourself has pitfalls. I just put a hole in a wall while trying to move some cabinets. There’s nobody to blame but me.

Yeah.  It’s a hard habit to break.  My kids are much more itinerant-- and thus far don’t have the same urge to collect stuff.

Ugh, same here. Our small house is our savior in that we just CAN’T keep certain things. But we can try lol

The problem I have right now is I have time to go through stuff, but nowhere to get rid of things like thrift shops, etc so it’s piling up in the shed.

At least it’ll be ready to go once a shop opens up. My wife has been going through some stuff and I just sold an extra set of wheels yesterday, but mostly I’ve been working on finishing projects lately.

We were gearing up to move before all of this insanity and clearing out the house that we moved into 10 years ago. There was way too much here, and too much still.

Get rid of it now before you get settled into the new place or you’ll have to do it again when you move next.

I’ve moved a few times. I purge and always end up with a bigger truck everytime I move.
