My son is working on getting his license, which means daily hour-long drives. The other day we got out of the city and into some farmland. It was really nice. Yesterday was a nighttime session, and we tooled around some fancy rich golf course neighborhood. Couldn’t see a whole lot, but we could almost smell the money.

Well I have to go to work so that will be my drive of the day. Thankfully my commute is a Canyon road to the PCH so it's pretty nice! It's funny though how I can drive my commute when not going to work and it feels entirely different than heading to work.

We used to live in an area where traveling north took us through an area downwind of a paper processing plant. The chemical stench was awful. I mentioned this to one of my coworkers and he said, “that, my friend, is the smell of money.”
The sad thing was that there was a town just downwind and they had to smell that all of the time. Someone told me that there were other chemicals that could be used to process the paper, but it was a bit more expensive. It was just a matter of someone forcing th e paper company to switch. The town didn’t have the political will to pursue it.

I was stationed on a Navy base that was near a paper mill, so I am familiar with the stench you are describing. Also, long term exposure leaves a nasty film on car windows that is very, very difficult to remove.

I took a drive yesterday. Louisiana has one of the highest rates of infection, yet you would never know it by the traffic. I had to retrieve a few items from storage and needed some assistance with the lock (I brought the wrong key and didn’t want to drive all the way back home just to search for the right key). The fellow behind the desk told me he was hospitalized last week with pneumonia , but tested negative for COVID. I was doing my best to maintain my distance, but this fellow kept trying to be polite - holding the door, reaching out to shake hands - and I had to keep reminding him to keep his distance. I was glad when he finally finished cutting off the old lock and went on his way. The few other customers I saw were much better about keeping their distance. It was a stressful experience. Maybe next time I’ll just go for a drive and not make any stops.

Shaking hands? And I thought people were at least a little smarter than that.
A woman lit up a cigarette near me yesterday and the smoke blew directly at me. Hoping it wasn’t carrying any virus with it.

Paper mills are the worst. Heading west out of the town where I grew up took you through Franklin, VA, where there is (was?) a huge paper mill. The smell was horrible. I went to college in a part of VA that was famous for growing turkeys, and they would use the beaks and feet and other bits to make dog food. If the wind was right, the whole campus smelled like wet kibble.

I have not. It’s a bit out of the way from Austin, but it is some beautiful country out there. I told my son that as we get towards the end of his 30-hour checklist we’ll need to head out of town and drive on some US and TX highways to get experience on those sorts of roads. That’ll be nice.

Oddly enough, t here’s some evidence that smoking provides some protection against COVID, but it’s not clear from the report whether or not smokers can be asymptomatic carriers of COVID.
“Conclusions and relevance: Our cross sectional study in both COVID-19 out- and inpatients strongly suggests that daily smokers have a very much lower probability of developing symptomatic or severe SARS-CoV-2 infection as compared to the general population.”
https://www.qeios.com/read/WPP19W.3
I wonder if the lower rate of incidence is because smokers seek assistance at a lower rate, smokers die before seeking assistance, or if smoking really does provide some form of protection.

And there’s some kind of circular reflection that frames her face perfectly. I’m a serious amateur photographer and as hard as I work at it, I can never fully excise the magic or the luck that makes a great photo.

Keep working at it! Studying composition, of great photographers or painters, may be helpful.

Someone posted that a few day s ago. My half-joking, half-serious reply was that it isn’t necessarily that it protects you directly, but that no one wants to be near smokers so they’re more successful at social distancing.

There’s a Purina plant that’s basically touching the interstate here. It’s bad enough to drive past but if the wind is right there are huge chunks of the city that smell like kibble.
I had a friend who grew up near a cereal factory - like, fruit loops/fruity pebbles and that sort. Apparently it was more nauseating than the dog food smell.

Oof. My grandmother stopped smoking after my grandfather, also a smoker, died from leukemia. She and my great-grandmother moved into a new house together shortly after he passed, so most of the smoker’s smell was left behind. A year or so later, her sense of smell was closer to normal and she noticed the stench of smoke on someone nearby and made a comment about it.
Yeah, grandma, that’s what you and your house smelled like my entire childhood.
