YouT ube has a number of complete race replays from back in the day , and I’m currently watching the 1997 Europe GP from Jerez. Epic battle between Schumacher and Villeneuve. Kind of strange to see all the cigarette advertising on the cars. I started watching F1 in about 1995 , and I’m really digging this.

“That didn’t work, Michael” is the understatement of the decade.

I became a Schumi fan at this time, but it’s pretty clear that he turned into Jacques. Schumi was an extraordinarily talented driver , but he didn’t like to lose. Still, it’s the most entertaining F1 race I’ve watched in quite some time.

He was very talented, but I think he’s slightly overrated as he had by far the best car for most of his career and a team throwing itself behind him as much as possible. I think, had Senna lived, seeing the improvements of Williams from 94-97, or had he maybe gone back to McLaren when they hooked up with Mercedes, that he would have taken a title or two from Schumacher. Of course you can also say “what if” for 1999 because Schumacher may well have won that title had he not broken his leg.

I started following F1 in 2005, when my house finally got Speed Channel. Alonso/Kimi in 05 and Alonso/Schumacher in 06 were great battles, and though I obviously dislike Alonso for his attitude (see my avatar, and, full disclosure, I’m currently wearing a shirt of the WEC team he drives for now), he’s also a really good driver.
