May be ready to get rid of a car. I have a 2008 535xi wagon. Fun as hell, really luxurious, but holy shit every other month its something. After running INPA (diag software) a bunch today, pretty damn sure I need new cats. The motor has 180k on it at this point. Wondering at what point I just sell it, its probably worth $5k-8k now, and I putting at least a few thousand into it each year.
Wife’s car at the moment so we’ll probably replace with a boring SUV too. booooooooo

Surely there is an alternative. I hate to see a longroof go away, but perhaps another wagon could be in her future? Depending on your price range you might get into a sportwagen or even a TourX if you are feeling spendy. Perhaps an Outback if ride height is important.

Sigh. I admire your fortitude...
TourX is a good idea. Or the Subie.

I dont know if there are cheap cats available for your car ( that , maybe ) but you can also find universal high flow cats for 100-200$ and exhaust shop are usually not too expensive for modifying stock exhaust.
I have a chinese 200 cpi cat bolt-on on my A3 and it was about the same price as a cheap standard replacement part (which is
400cpi cat
in my case
)
and does sensibly
better on the smog tests of our MOT than the original part that was more than 200000km old (but still withing limits)
, not to mention the sound/performance enhencements.
Or it simply could be the lambda sensor after the cat that is not reading correctly, as long as the cat is not clogged it wont be an issue driving the car (but if you car about polution its another story)
.

I have no idea what your budget is but I just got a new E450 wagon. It’s seriously the best car I’ve ever owned. I can’t recommend it enough if it’s within your budget.

The E60 is not the greatest looking wagon anyway . Get an E39 540i wagon. All E39s that are still running will run forever. Modern but not too modern as to throw a friggin’ surprise at you every other month .
-Source: I own an E39 non-wagon.

So, get another one!
Awesome rides!!! I have owned a 528i for 10+ years now. Supercharged it about 5 years ago and still amazingly reliable (after you get to know their minor annoyances).

Haha I should pitch the wife on it. I always tell her its the peak of car design. Modern enough, still understated and not too complex/electronics. I’ve had the silver one for about 6 years now I think. (Went from an e60 before that ha), and got the M5 about 1.5 years ago. I just realized how shit the color is on that pic, m5 is green on tan
