Magane, Talisman and Koleos to be discontinued. Focus will be shifted towards electric cars and crossovers.
Renault regrets nothing.
Meanwhile Peugeot is going safe and is only releasing hybrid and electric versions of its current cars.
Hopefully they will still make it to US shores because their cars are pretty awesome.

I LOATHE the fact everybody is dumping cars for crossovers and SUVs....
‘Let’s all switch to things that require MORE materials, use more FUEL, and take up MORE space despite the fact most people can easily make due with something smaller and more efficient!’ :(

It makes me sad...there are almost no small basic cars left these days, which is what I like...makes me hate to think what I’ll be forced to pick from in another 10-15 years :(

and that is why there arent any.
if you were buying a new car every 2 or 3 years like the masses, then yea, they would probably take you more into consideration.
buying a car once every one or two decades? why should they bother?

Honestly, I’m actually starting to understand it. I don’t like it, but I get it. Because the biggest unexpected downside of driving my Thunderbird that I’ve encountered is the tallness of all the cars around me. Sure, classic American cars like mine are long and wide, but compared to modern cars, the side profile is much, much lower. When you combine that with the long hood, if an SUV pulls up next to me, I can’t frickin’ see past them. People tell me to just look through their windows, but I can’t see those either. All I get is an eyeful of some soccer mom’s door. If I’m at an intersection and I want to turn right on red, I better hope an SUV or truck doesn’t pull up next to me, because then I won’t be able to see the oncoming traffic. There have been many occasions where I’ve sat for a long time at a red light with nobody coming the other way, but I am forced to sit there at the mercy of the traffic light because I’m not tall enough to make sure no one will hit me . The closest I’ve come to getting in an accident was a direct result of this, because I was in a parking lot with pickup trucks on either side of me and couldn’t for the life of me see if anyone was coming. As I cautiously pulled out, a Volkswagen rabbit came speeding up to me and slammed on the brakes, skidding to a stop just a couple feet from the nose of my car, scaring the crap out of me. So I agree with you that it’s stupid how tall the average vehicle has become, but I can’t really blame the people buying them. Visibility is important.

True, but the reason visibility is worse now is that everybody IS driving things that are larger. If everybody was still driving predominantly cars, the issue would be a moot point, but I get where you’re coming from.

I was just using that number as an example. I have no idea how often I replace my car, lol....I just go until it’s not logically or financially feasible to repair it.
Getting a new car every two or three years is stupid...there is no way it would be anywhere near worn out at that point so it’s just a waste of money if they were buying it and trading it in...I can understand for leases, of course as that is how they work, but still...

But this. This is a “visibility” arms race with no end. I say “visibility” because the cars themselves are hard to see out of immediately around you but they have some ability to make long distance sight better. My Cruze is one of the easiest modern cars to see out of I've ever driven because of the low beltline but if it weren't for the short hood exiting parking lots with SUVs around would be way harder.

In Europe the full size pickups and “real” SUV are extremely rare, what is usually called SUV here is a CUV, the best selling of those is the VW Tiguan which is based on the Gold and only ~15cm (~6in) longer and higher than a Golf so there is no real visibility issue for other cars .
Most people buy those because they are supposedly more practical and more conforable to get in/out and those peoples like to be a little on top of the road.

The Megane 4 is underperforming and its a shame because its a really good looking car and is better by most metrics than the Focus that sold almost twice as much last year in Europe :(
I am almost certain that i
have seen more often new A110 than Megane 4 RS.

If they cut the Mégane (as in; a compact), it would be the start of the end of Renault. It’s a traditional volume seller. Especially now that the EU will issue fines for manufacturers that emit more than a specific amount of CO2 per car. You don’t achieve those numbers with conventional crossovers, even the smallest crossovers are too dirty.
Talisman and Koleos are rather big, so I can see them cutting those. There is no volume in non-luxury large vehicles.
I assume they will move to hybrids and electrics.

As a side-note, the Clio, Captur and Megane E-Tech hybrid (using a 1.6 naturally aspirated, two electric motors and a clutchless dog box transmission) are supposed to be available this summer.

W ith my car’s thin pillars and big windows, visibility is, for the most part, fantastic. The problem is when one of the steel walls that every other person drives these days pulls up next to me, completely blocking oncoming traffic from view, and preventing me from being able to turn right on red. Those things are the reason why I pick far away parking spots. It’s not the door dings I’m worried about, I just don’t want to get hit because I couldn’t see someone coming.

Maybe it’s not a problem in Europe, but in ‘Murica, everyone and their mother drives an SUV or pickup truck, and that makes visibility an issue when you drive a small or low car like me.

I think the problem is that when people started seeing SUVs and big trucks on the road, they started thinking “I don’t want to lose in a crash with that thing,” so they we nt out and bought some for themselves. Pretty soon, every other car on the road is an SUV or CUV...

Those long hoods can be problemat ic for sure. I often have a very difficult time seeing over this one massive wall from a cemetery when pulling into cross traffic even with my shorty good so I avoid that intersection entirely when driving something bigger. I imagine every F150 and CRV is like that when you are real low. It’s about knowing your limits there.
Also, modern cars with side curtain airbags have MASSIVE pillars that sometimes interfere with around corner sightlines. Fortunately, a lowish and mostly non tapered beltline gives the Cruze better than average visibility for a modern car. All those crash struct ures have to go somewhere, which ironically makes low speed impacts way more likely.

I can’t be too mad at long hoods, though. For all their problems, they look sooo good. And there’s nothing quite like the feeling you get when you’re driving in the morning and you see a beautiful sunrise reflected in the hood...

Hmm that does sound nice. Modern hoods are too tapered for aerodynamic reasons to see much of them, but a blinding sun in miniature has its own problems.

Yeah, it has to be at the right angle so you don’t get blinded, but when the conditions are just right.... Mmmmm .
