For four years now Steam has been maintainin g and distributing their own bootable operating system that can be installed in a gaming machine.  Problem is, i t’s Linux-based and thus cannot run MOST GAMES EVER MADE. On top of that the interface is too highly modified to be useful as a general desktop OS. It doesn’t even have a file explorer by default. So it’s an operating system that can neither be used as an operating system nor can it be used for the one thing the company that made it is known for.

Yup. n ot very useful!

My ‘gaming machine’ runs Win10, but my ‘DD’ laptop and Media Center PC run Linux Mint 19.3 - not great for gaming, no, but I can still play some light games on them to pass the time if need be, like Stardew Valley or the like! :)

To be honest, I like Windows and have nothing against it as I’ve never really had issues with it, personally, but if there was suddenly a way to run Windows games on Linux, I’d go with Linux because I am one of those weird people who loves to tinker and I love the customizability and personaliz ation of of it.

My experiences with Linux have been annoying. I n this day and age the command line shouldn’t have to be a part of daily PC operations, and installing a program shouldn’t take hours of trawling through forums to find out why it failed.

Windows Subsystem for Linux . I can run all my tinkery scripts and weird specialty CLI programs (and compile them as needed)   and even install a WM to run GUI Linux programs ... Sure, it’s not quite really running Linux, but it beats the piss out of a virtual machine for getting my simultaneous Windows/Linux fix.

True, WSL exists, but I am not as deep into Linux as needing to run scripts via command prompt other than tossing a few commands here and there for things like installing packages from the repositories, altering certain system config files (fstab, samba configs) and changing a few harder-to-access settings like specific touchpad options...so I don’t really have a need for WSL....I guess I like the Linux desktop options. My current go-to is MATE.

I’ve only needed the Terminal for oddly specific settings, otherwise I never need to touch it under Mint. I’ve also very rarely had a package fail to install correctly, a few times sure but not very often. I’ve been using Linux daily on my laptops since 2012......maybe having no issues for me is just luck of the draw I guess....?

I’m happily replying to you from my Linux Mint MATE 19.3 media center PC as I type this :)

There’s nothing quite like having an installation fail because you’re missing a dependency, but you can’t install that dependenc y because there’s another dependency missing and then THAT dependecy fails to install because of some weird bug.

Huh. I’m of the general opinion that with the exception of a few very pretty aesthetic options, the general linux desktop gui experience is vastly inferior to what MacOS and Windows offer, but with WSL I get all the Posix subsystem goodness while still having a better desktop experience. I mean, MacOS Snow Leo pard was pretty much the platonic ideal of a power-user-friendly but still easy to use OS... Then Apple started forcing the app store and restrictive security by default and modal apps and being obviously a company that without its previous visionary leadership was only capable of leveraging it’s legacy as opposed to actual innovation, and I ditched them... Microsoft showed with Win10, I feel, that they realized they were headed down a dead end to impossible t o administer and maintain software and were willing to fix it... You can complain about their data collection and privacy policies if you like, but you better not do it with your mouth full of Apple, if you know what I mean. Microsoft’s support of Linux and the WSL has benefited Open Source software as much, possible more than it has benefited them, and I’m quite happy with the ways PowerShell has grown and increased its usability as well. Windows to me feels like an OS that’ s evolving right now, MacOS feels like an OS that’s devolving... Linux, well I've already mentioned that WSL pretty much solves all my issues with it...

Yeah, everybody has preferences, so as long as you find something you like and that works for you, that’s all that matters :)

I’m with you on the devolving Apple thing. I’m OK with Apple, but I’ve always been of the opinion that their stuff is really overpriced and their continuing method of making a lot of their stuff proprietary is not helping...

Can’t say I’ve ever had that bad a luck, though I can see where you’re coming from. I’ve had installs fail because of broken packages, but then I just went into the Package Manager, selected the ‘fix broken packages’ option and then reinstalled it and it was fine. As for missing dependencies, I’ve only run into one or two instances of that, but I just went and found those dependencies elsewhere, installed them and then installed the thing I needed.
