Yeah, so from the Kim dynasty I think you have at least:

His older brother (not the one he murdered, but the one his father thought was too feminine to lead)

His sister (who as you say is sai d to be a real piece of work)

His own children (we don’t know how many there are, just that at least one is a girl, and the oldest is 10). Possible regency under is wife or sister?

His late eldest brother’s children (I believe he had two families, one in Beijing and one in Macau). Great choices if the Chinese want to try to put a puppet on the throne.

I think he’s executed most of his remaining family, but maybe there are some less prominent descendants of Kim Il Sung out there.

And of course there’s always the chance one or more North Korean general would prefer to take their chances with their own military prowess rather than risk bac king the wrong heir.

No they are not confirmed. South Korean and US intel have just heard rumors. Until China or DPRK says its confirmed I doubt we will know for sure. I wonder how you spin this when you say they are gods and have unicorns etc...

I’d like to think that, all over that country, our sleeper agents are being roused from their slumbers to ensure the best outcome...

There’s also his aunt, Kim Kyon g-hui. She’s a general in the People’s Army, former cabinet minister, and member of the WKP’s Central Committee. She was rumored to have been executed 7 years ago, but has been seen in public several times since then, including a ceremony earlier this year.

Even if some other general, or junta of them,  seizes power, I could still see them wanting a member of the Kim family out there as at least a figure head. Given how strongly engrained the cult of personality is, and how many references there are to the Kims in their constitution, it might be hard to do a total clean break.

She’s not a descendant of Kim Il Sung, a woman, and the daughter of professionals rather than power figures in the party or military. It’s tough to see how she could rule in North Korea, except as a regent for her children, which I did mention.

You have much more faith in the CIA than I do. From the CIA’s history, I’d assume they we don’t have many, if any agents, and that we would seriously screw up in any attempt to use them.

The CIA agents are probably working against themselves.

Would they even want that, though? It cost Germany over $2 trillion to rebuild the former East Germany after reunification, and North Korea is an impoverished, underdeveloped, backward, b asket case compared to the DDR.

Given the chance, most North Koreans would probably gladly pack up and move south, where things are already decent, instead of staying put and waiting for things to get better, depopulating the north and leaving it without an able-bodied workforce to support economic development (pretty much what’s also happening in Puerto Rico right now).

A  better, less autocratic government and a freer, more capitalist economy in the N orth, with separate development for several decades, followed by peaceful reunification after much of the damage is reversed is probably the ideal situation.

https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2019/11/german-reunification-offers-lessons-korea/601297/

“ In Germany in the early 1990s, people in the west made two to three times as much as their eastern counterparts. In 2017, South Korea’s per capita GDP was $29,743 . That same year, North Korea’s was $1,214 —a 25-to-1 differential.”

That isn’t a widespread desire in the south. They want peace, but unlike their grandparents, they don’t have any memory of relatives on the other side, and little desire to shoulder the tens of billions it would take.

But iran had an economy with international folks coming and going. NK is unplugged and with communes, I cant see inserting an agent would even be possible. you would have to think about 1950s soviet union,

You don’t think our three-letter agencies have friendlies in S. Korea and China who go back and forth regularly? It’s relatively easy to cross the river on the north border to get in and out— not that I want to reveal any tradecraft.

And, both those countries have a strong interest in a favorable outcome from any transition in power this time.
