He was prev iously at A uto week. From my few run- ins with Rory ... he is a cynical man. I think It’ll be a good fit.

Really passing over the current writers for this, aren’t they?

Something needs to change over there, but I’m surprised it will be new blood.

no full Torch/Raph takeover......yet

I think he was in some type of management at A utoweek so he has experience in that role. But they also folded ... I’ m just happy a person I know is employed again.

They’ve been losing too many writers. Hoping Rory helps the place.

Those guys need someone to point them in the right direction.

I stayed up all night amotherfuckinggain last night. Looked through the FP for a while thinking WTF happened. There is just that one guy posting with any kind of frequency. They’re all desperate articles/posts and then him cursing out commenters. I mean some of them deserved it but still it’s ugly and like “I don’t wanna read this, take your shit to Jezebel.”
Then I watched hours of Steve Lheto vids.

Never go full Torch.

Maybe none of the current writers wanted it? I guarantee Tracy and Torch wouldn’t want it, because they’d have to move to New York.

Rory seems like car pro. I can see him pushing the site to more car news, less hot gossip.

Tenure doesn’t always mean suitability to lead. I couldn’t see any of the current writers in the EiC role. Maybe Robicelli now that I think of it.

Passing over Jason Torchinsky AND not hiring Blake Rong?
It’s outrageous . It’s unfair.
![]() 04/23/2020 at 11:13 |

Is this a “stick to cars” hire?
Hopefully it’s a change for the better, but not a move too far.

I’ve never been in a role where I wanted my boss’s job. I suppose that’s even more common in media/writing (also in sales) . The boss thing just feels like it might suck the joy out of the role for a lot of people.

O oo, didn’t think of that, but maybe. He still leans left but doesn’ t seem abrasive about it.

Where would Tracy find room in NYC for all his rusted out shitbox keeps?

Get to him!
A ccording to IG, he’s got a classic 911 project, older WRX, LX460(?), super old jeep and I think his wife drives a GTI.
Think that counts as a pass.

Exactly!

I don’t think Torch has any interest in relocating to NYC.

No o ne’ s moving to NYC right now

Well, there’s that.

I’m glad for that. I think Raph is the longest tenured at this point but I have bever thought his writing to be good enough for the EIC role. I also think he lacks so grasp of the industry as a whole and has too much of a niche focus. Torch is much the same by the latter criteria, but a better writer. I think Andrew could be EIC one day if he toughs it out.
Hopefully Rory can bring in a few writers who sound less like angsty teenagers with an over-inflated value of their own opinions.

Hopefully he can turn this a uto blog around. It has REALLY gone downhill within the past couple years.

I’m okay with most of the political stuff goes away. It makes perfect sense to discuss political implications of things that revolve around the industry, and discussing the ethics of using ICE cars in the age of climate change is also completely reasonable, but the “holier than thou”, big-city-centric attitude can go.
Why don’t you people just walk to work?

FWIW, I really enjoying my Autoweek subscription when I had it. They had a great focus on the people behind the stories (David Tracy does a great job connecting with people).

I may give that site another shot. I read it for years but gave up 3 or 4 months ago because it fo so political. It was ridiculousness..

Wonder when the announcement will be made on Jalopnik. Or if there will be an announcement...
I always liked how Patrick would often post a short comment on other writer’s first posts to introduce the community to the new bylines. Haven’t seen anything like that for the fresh faces at Jalopnik since he left though.

Yup - a little humility goes a long way.
...b ut doesn’t get nearly as many clicks as being an asshole.
