One of the reasons I am glad I moved to Texas is that I learned that Frito Pie is a thing.

Up in Michigan I think we’d call that walking tacos.

Fun fact: they used to make Fritos off 94 in Detroit by the big tire. When I was in high school we'd drive out there just to smell em.

So, it’s just a Frito boat without the boat? Here’s an upgrade for you.

Replace the Fritos with fries.

And just like K-Fed, you, too, will be be shouting POPOZAO! after consuming.

We had a bread factory near our house, and it was always pleasant to drive past it. In fact, that factory, Nolde’s, is where Dan Shore has his Fantomworks now.

On the negative side, I went to college at James Madison, which was in Rockingham County, VA, a place famous for its turkey industry. They would take all the beaks and feet and whatever and make dog food out of it. There was a Purina factory near campus, and every so often, if the wind was blowing just right, it smelled like wet dog food all over campus.

Never heard of a Frito boat. I do know that “proper” Frito pie should be eaten out of the Frito bag. Slit the side of the bag, dump in the chili and cheese, enjoy.

We had a lot of food options at the dining hall in college, including a line that served burgers and fries every night. On the nights when the other line was serving roast beef and gravy, I would get a dinner plate and cover it with fries, then go to the other line and put brown gravy all over the fries. Oh, yeah, that was good.

There’s a small chain of Chili joints around the DC area called Hard Times that makes a pretty good Frito pie. They also do c hili m ac (Chili over spaghetti noodles ) and chili over a giant hunk of cornbread.

The last school I went to no longer served meals in the cafeteria in the dorms so they leased that space out to a company that made sushi for local grocery stores. The residents shared dumpsters with the sushi joint, and let me tell you, the smell, especially during a hot Los Angeles summer, was, umm, intense.

I’ve never been a fan of chili over noodles. I have been to Cincinnati, and tried the Skyline chili, but I didn’t care for their recipe at all. I know those are fighting words to some, same as saying bad things about In-n-Out. Never had chili over cornbread, but that sounds good.

I know Texans who periodically throw chili parties with homemade hot chili, usually on fritos. Endorsed, although no beans > beans.

Add a little yellow mustard on top. You won’t regret it.

Chili over noodles (especially elbows) is delicious.

The stuff they eat in Cincinnati is bad.

I had only heard of Frito pie from King of the Hill; I didn’t realize until much later what it actually was made of, and that it actually used Fritos.

Looks tasty btw, I’m currently skipping lunch so that I can log off early this evening but damn that has me reconsidering my decision...

I’ve never had Frito pie before, so is plain yellow best or does it get any better with the fancy mustards?

This joint also does 4* styles of chili - Cincinnati (sweet), Terra L e ngua (sp? anyways it’s kinda spicy) and “Texas” (minimally seasoned ground beef someone forgot to make into hamburger patties ). They also do a vegetarian chili, I guess.

I like chili over noodles but it gets messy. Chili over cornbread is delicious but gets soggy if you don’t eat it relatively quickly. I usually go for Frito Pie with Texas .

Skyline’s good, but only if it’s homemade IMHO. Chain stuff never compares.

Just to commit my own heresy , there’s a WW recipe for great chili that uses beef round instead of ground.

I graduated from undergrad in 1989. We had amazing food. There was the main dining hall that had one line of varying menu, one line of burgers, and one line of salads. Breakfast had standard fare including an omelets-to-order line. There were numerous smaller dining options all over campus, including fast food and vegetarian. All of it was part of the meal plan, so you just swiped your ID. T here was even a steak place in the top of the student union where you could go for a steak dinner and table service. You got (IIRC ) ten steak dinners per semester on your plan. I did not go hungry.

I must admit, I make mine in the crockpot with a standard envelope of seasonings. I’m not big on really spicy food, and my kids like it. But I do prefer a mix of meat and beans. Since we’re trying to limit trips to the grocery store, this recipe, which usually has two pounds of beef, only had one, and the difference was made up with more beans. It’s all protein, yo.

On an unrelated note I did some testing yesterday on running folding under a non-admin account.

It seems all you need to do is actually copy the F@H shortcut and put it somewhere the non-admin user can access (c:\temp) for example.

Then log in as the non-admin user

Bring up the run command by hitting (windows key + r) and then type in ‘shell:startup’ (without the apostrophes) and hit enter . This will bring up the startup folder for that user. Now paste the F@H shortcut you copied from the admin desktop into the startup folder you just opened.

Reboot and it should launch and run under the non-admin user and run with how you configured it as admin.

I’ve never tried that, but I’ll give it a shot. And there’s no shame in good old fashioned yellow mustard. When I make ham casserole (basically homemade Mac and cheese with cut up ham), I add a squirt of yellow mustard to help bring out the cheese flavor.

Thank you. I think that Skyline has become a thing where people like to brag about eating there or like to be seen eating there. It’s not about the food.

It is very good. You don’t need to make your own chili. I’ve used a can (or two) of Wolf chili. You have to decide if you want beans in your chili or not. A bag of Fritos and some cheddar cheese and you’re on your way.

Thanks. I actually managed to figure this out by reading the Internet. Seems that only the shortcut installed by the application will start it. So I copied the shortcut to the Public Users folder and then  navigate to it when I want to run. I suppose I could make a shortcut to that folder and put it somewhere accessible?

In other news, we’ve broken 700k points! It’s been running on Medium all day on my boys’ computers, but we’ll see what happens when they fire up Rainbow 6 Siege. Might need to stop it.

I’m one who likes it, and actually make it from scratch fairly often. I’ve seen a lot of people who seem put off by it because they’re expecting it to be chili. The only thing chili about it is the little bit of chili powder. I think the allspice in it can sort of make it slightly Mediterranean in flavor (and the whole thing was started by Greeks in Ohio so that makes sense).

I think I just like basically any non-creamy food with lots of spices and seasonings. And especially when made at home it can definitely check the “I threw half the spice cabinet in the pot” box for me.

Are the chili cheese flavor   fritos a regional thing? The existence of those made me always assume Frito Chili Pies were a well known thing.   Or do people elsewhere see that as just another “strange” chip flavor that happens to work well?

Fair enough. This stuff, you understand, exudes beef drippings stained red with pepper, so it’s a little more... what’s the word, hostile than a lot of chili. Even in the allegedly-mild version . As to beans, I’m not averse to refried beans served alongside chili when prepared for tacos/etc., but something about the textural qualities when in chili whole... doesn’t really do it for me. Preference, not force of law - I’ll still eat a good chili with beans, just won’t seek it out. (Fie on thee, Wendy’s! Fie!)

Mustard is the best, I’m definitely fine with classic yellow but I do enjoy the grainy ones, the Dijon ones, honey mustards and spicy ones, depending on what I'm eating.

It's such an amazing condiment

Yep!  As a kid, my mom would add macaroni to chili leftovers, to stretch them out and feed the whole family.  So it’s a comfort food to me.

It really is the name that throws it off. The first time I had it (either Gold Star or Skyline, I forget) no one told me it wasn’t regular chili con carne - so I was grossed out by the taste.

If you told me it was Greek spaghetti sauce I’m sure I’d eat it.
