I’m going to stop saying, “When you think things couldn’t get more absurd...” because we’ve moved well beyond any level of comprehensible absurdity.

Normally I don’t care for how the Chinese government responds to news, but this time the term “frivolous” is perfect.

Can I sue my government?

Yep that’s going nowhere, but that hasn’t stopped politicians from wasting taxpayer money on spurious lawsuits to score political points before.
And of course I am endlessly amused that everything they accuse China of was also done by the US government, except instead of Chinese local officials trying to avoid looking bad, who were then overruled by more competent national bureaucrats , it was all right from the top here.

I don’t really have a problem with entities like the Chinese government being sued. If memory serves me, the ability of US citizens to sue foreign governments came from legislation allowing victims of 9/11 to sue the Saudi government (another shitty entity). I would think their ability to collect is zero, however. In certain instances (I know in water adjudication in AZ it’s allowed), you can sue the US government.

Probably, but the supreme court has become so selective with cases maybe they’ll never get to you.

And the gold standard of irony comes from the fact that most of the strain that decimated NYC came from Europe . I can’t even any more.

Or the 5 conservative justices will simply refuse to hear the case.

Us citizens have very little ability to successfully sue foreign governments due to the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_Sovereign_Immunities_Act
There are very few exceptions, none of which are expected to apply here.

Incidentally, the DOJ is threatening to help citizens sue states over lockdowns.
So while our states sue China for letting the virus spiral out of control, our federal government is threatening to sue states for not letting the virus spiral out of control.

I think 45's (and by definition, the Rs, as they follow his every move) issue with China is kind of a crush thing - he wishes he could be Jinping and preside over a kleptocratic economy with no real social justice or environmental standards. Kind of like picking on the kid you actually like.
And no surprise about Europe. Also notice the recent immigration prohibition, which stinks of Stephen Miller, also doesn’t appear to apply to pay-for-play residency. What a shock.

What a darkest dumbest timeline, indeed. Thanks, deplorables!
Only in Murka could a chucklefuck like Barr rise to power and relative wealth. Just look at his CV, more people who would have been rightfully given the blade in different times and places.
But when even the brave accountable responsible praetorian heroes are mouthing off, no doubt based on political motives, anything will be possible:

That law was amended by the Justice Against Sponsored Terrorism Act (JASTA) in 2016. While it’s meant for acts of terrorism, I think we’ve all seen how broad that brush has gotten. Also, because Jasta:

I downloaded the complaint and read it, and agree with the Chinese government spokesman’s (very succinct) legal analysis. I also think it is a waste of Missouri taxpayers’ money so egregious that somebody should probably sue the Attorney General (who, ironically, will claim sovereign immunity). In sum, this is a wasteful political stunt undertaken by a political hack in the hope that enough idiots will like it that they’ll elect him governor. That part will probably work, but it will be the only part.
An interesting note: the judge they drew is Rush Limbaugh’s first cousin, but fortunately it appears that the brain worms don’t run in the family.

It’s certainly a lot more egregious than the timeline alleged in the complaint, which hinges in significant part on the four days in December between a doctor in Wuhan figuring out that a new virus might be a foot and reporting it to the Chinese government and the government reporting it to the WHO. Also, nothing in there about the Chinese national government seizing shipments of PPE purchased by state and local governments and then either selling them back at a markup or redirecting them to favored jurisdictions.

That news is so ridiculous. Essentially the White House itself has guidance released on what measures need to be taken before we can ease the restrictions again...and the states for the most part are going along with those guidelines. But the president’s own words go directly against his own administration’s guidance. And now his justice department is showing support for those wanting to sue their state governments following actions that the executive branch themselves claim to support (or not support depending on which audience he’s pandering to).
Are there any reasonable republicans left who see just what a huge self-created mess this is?

That’s, like, 25% right. We’ve always had the right to sue foreign governments, it’s just quite limited. One frequently-cited example is if a foreign diplomat runs you over in an embassy car while on official business, you can probably successfully sue that foreign government (as well as the driver, presumably). The governing statute was passed in 1976. The 2016 law you’re thinking of is specific to sponsors of international terrorism only.

Yes, and it looks increasingly like you probably should (see Just Jeepin’s post above about the DOJ siding with people protesting state restrictions that echo the federal government’s guidance).
