Kinja'd!!!

Smoked like a chimney, seat was collaped along with most of the interior, and the trans felt like it would go at any second. In other words, perfect

I have a lot of fond memories in one of these. A good friend growing up , Big John , had one. His dad has a turbo diesel variant and had bought a non-turbo as a parts car, but it ran and most of it was there, so John took it over and started driving it when he got a license . Some highlights include:

We pegged the 85 MPH speedo on the highway one day. He had the thing floored for seriously a minute. We were both screaming most of the time. I have had a lot of crazy shit happen in my life and this is probably still in the top 5 scariest.

The door cards weren’t always firmly attached to the doors. Sometimes you’d open a door and the door card would be stuck in the door jamb and you couldn’t get in. You’d slam the door, then re-open it, and it would be fine

Adjusting the climate control involved moving the switches to your desired settings and then Big John jerking the wheel and swerving so half the car was off the road until you hit a big enough bump to shake all the relays loose and things would start to work.

Listening to him argue with a meth addled, toothless redneck neighbor of mine about his “High revving, refined, European, performance diesel”

Ahh, those were the good ol days.

I got a 1997 E300 non turbo diesel. First year of Damiler Chysler. And I too have problems getting my climate controls to change. I never thought of aiming for potholes on purpose though. It IS a hi revving 4 valver. It shifts at 4k and will rev to 5500!
