Hey yall,

Thanks for the help yesterday - I decided to just go with a 1660 Super since in Canadian rubles it has a good balance of price/performance.

That said, I pulled the trigger on an Asus TUF 1660 Super because I found it at a super low price: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

However, this morning I was doing some reading and found out some models of the 1660 Super use GDDR6 vs GDDR5, which is what the card I purchased will use. I have no problems cancelling the order because I see Asus models with GDDR6 for ~$30 more like this one:

So, should I spend the extra and go with a GDDR6 model? I’m focused on the Asus models since they have a DVI and HDMI, which is what my TVs use, whereas a lot of other manufacturers use Displayport, which would require me to purchase more adapters/cables to work with my current TVs.

I really wouldn’t worry about it.  the difference is a little bit higher theoretical bandwidth, but clocked the same I don’t think you’ll see anything.

i went gddr6 coz uhhh...higher number means betterrer right?

my old card had gddr5 and it asploded...new one hasnt asploded...yet...

(though i probably wont be gaming in a heatwave to test me theory....thats when the old one dieded)

i really really need to do some reading on hardware....i was up to date and halfway knowledgeable back when 3dfx was the hot new thing to have

Stick with the card you have. The change for many cards switching to GDDR6 lately is due to limited supply of GDDR5.  Maybe 1-2% improvement in very specific scenarios, you’ll likely not see any change.

I’ll hang on to my $30 then. If the 1660 Super upgrade goes well then I want to get a CPU cooler to replace the stock one which is giving me mid-high 90s temperatures when under load. I’d imagine my 4770k is thermal throttling itself.

Yeah I was worried that there may be a bigger gap in performance that I’d be missing out on.

As I mentioned to JimZ I’ll save that money and put it towards a new CPU cooler if the 1660 Super upgrade runs well. The stock cooler needs replacement since it’s so loud under load, especially when doing Folding@Home.

I believe the difference in speed due to the memory on the card will be microscopic at best.  I say don’t worry about it.

It shouldn’t be a big difference in performance. The choice is as much due to memory pricing as anything else. 6 is better, but not worth paying much of a premium for IMO.

holy shit, almost any heatpipe cooler should do way better than that. Is Intel still packing in that shitty little extruded round heatsink?

Check out Gamers Nexus reviews, they are deep deep into this kind of thing and pull no punches. I. A different review, The 1660ti has 20xx parts but no ray tracing....and they found underlying extra benefits to that...

But they’ve usually answered any of your questions in their reviews, both YouTube and online.

AFAIK it’s the stock cooler, the heatsink looks square so that it has mounting points around the CPU socket but the fins themselves seem to be in a circular pattern.

It probably doesn’t help that it’s been probably close to two years without a good cleaning with compressed air.

Once I get the GPU installed I want to make sure I have enough room for a new cooler; there seems to be a fair amount of recommendations for this one: https://www.amazon.ca/Cooler-Master-Hyper-212-RR-212E-20PK-R2/dp/B005O65JXI/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=212+evo&qid=1587311091&sr=8-1

Thanks! I’ll keep them in mind for the future.

When I was a kid was waaaaay nerdier and I knew so much more about CPUs, GPUs (I guess we called them graphics cards back then); I still remember when Geforce first came out and it was groundbreaking in terms of detail/FPS. Heck, I remember when we first broke the 500 megahertz and then the gigahertz barrier for CPU clock speeds.

Looks like I’ll save my money and go with the 1660 that I bought (which I just learned isn’t a Super but it appears differences are minimal) and then dump the savings into a CPU cooler.

That’s the intel stock cooler you have. And they suuuuck for the higher end processors. I went with the Hyper 212 Evo RGB because fancy lights. It works great in my system and keeps my 4790k cool while folding. Also while you are in there, you might want to make sure you have your cooling optimized and clean everything out.

Yeah, that’s not ideal, not terrible, but could be much better.
