Since I ain’t got no job and ain’t got shit to do, I’ve been plugging away at the interior of the El Camino. It has a Grant steering wheel that is circa 1982 and used to reside in a 1971 Monte Carlo. It was gross and filthy, so I cleaned it, sanded it and then applied 4 coats of tung oil finish. Once that cured, I sanded some more and then applied four coats of spar urethane, sanding between each coat. It came out pretty well. It’s dry in these shots.
Next, I decided to tackle the gauge cluster after the new fuel gauge arrived. I am waiting on the plastic that will be used for the final fit up, but I was able to mock this up with some Masonite. I screwed up the turn signal indicator locations and I still need to drill out the bezel for the fuel gauge, but it’s coming together. The whole shooting match will be painted semi-gloss black to match the dash trim. I can’t wait to have working gauges. And the GPS speedometer should be cool. You can clock your 0-60 time with it. I bet my car will do it too. Hell, I went 70 in it just the other day.

I want that horn button. Much cooler than the one they use now (It’s just the word ‘GRANT’ in chrome letters)
