“Damn, I can’t read that sign all the way back here. It looks important, though. Better get closer, don’t want to break any rules.”

I found that on a USMC Reddit, and one commenter said that it didn’t matter since most Iraqis were illiterate.

I think I saw the same sign at the grocery store today. It was a pretty rough neighborhood...

From unesco. The older generations are quite low but the rest of the population is pretty literate. I think that commenter might just be a bit racist.

That is entirely possible, considering the source.

Maybe Afghanistan? There was a documentary 5or 6 years ago following g a training of afghan soldiers and one of the challenges at the time 3/4 were illiterate. I think it was a drill Sargent saying they have to recreate grades 1-4. Orders can’t be posted, duty assignments, supply lists, manuals, all are twice as difficult as you then have to have the guy who can read repeat it.

Lol. My colleague at work wrote on the back of her hi-vis vest, ‘keep back two meters’.

‘ I asked gas meters, water meters or electricity meters?’, 'if water meters, how big is your water meter?',  as in the rest of the world a it’s spelled metre in measurement and meter in a measuring device. Her son, who also works with us, just shook his head and said, ‘oh mum’ and walked away.

Another complication for Afghanistan is there are quite a few d ifferent languages.

Can’t be true. This is way too considerate of other people’s units of measure. In America we tell everyone 100 yards, or the length of a football field. Just so everyone is clear and on the same page.

I used to have this magnet on my fridge. My housemate put it on there after returning from Iraq.
