A week ago (or so) I had never seen a 3D printer in person. I dropped off 20 face shields to Temple hospital today (200 in total from our company) . I was able to do that almost entirely thanks to the fine folks here at Oppositelock. I’ll name names: Slant6, Shop-Teacher, Censored, benjrblant, chaozbandit, rockingthe2, Akio Ohtori, RallyDarkstrike - Fan of 2-cyl FIATs, Eastern Bloc & Kei cars, f86sabre, and anyone I missed who commented or helped out!

Kinja'd!!!

Really neat thing we have going on here!

I was able to modify the file we were given to print 2 masks at once and much faster! Even the young kid who got us all started with this said, “Why do you have to go so hard at everything? I’m embarrassed”. 30+ year old oppos know how nice it feels to have someone younger be impressed with your work (as slight as it may be).

I told him about my secret resource. After he was asking how I was getting all this info so quickly. He said, “what like a car forum?” I said, “not really, haha. It’s kind of hard to explain but it’s car-centric, if you’re interested I’m happy to introduce you around” He’s a car guy too. Rolled an Acura Vigor until we hired him, then he bought a new Toyota 86.

Anyway I have upgraded both my printer and my workspace. Sadly I have decided to re purpose my SUPER nice router table (temporary) as my creation station. The table has feet that screw in allowing me to level the table perfectly, and also I’m not using it because the learning curve is pretty high and I almost lost my hand the first time I tried it.

On the printer side. I have purchased the following:

borosilicate glass print surface
Upgraded “silent” mainboard
M otor smoothers
Upgraded bowden tubing & couplers
A metal extruder
Upgraded knobs and leveling springs

Kinja'd!!!

Connections were COVERED in hot glue. Such a pain in the dick

Kinja'd!!!

New “silent” mainboard

Kinja'd!!!

Modeling station in the works along with the motor smoother setup for the printer and cable management

Kinja'd!!!

Finally, some COLORS!

I also bought a bunch of commonly used hardware and electronic bits.

All of these bits and pieces are coming in piece meal (obvi) so I am now really good at leveling, doing the thickness tests, esteps etc... I was going to wait and throw everything on at once, but I think I’d rather see the help or hindrance of each upgrade.

My next plans for printing are almost all pegboard attachments/accessories. Some of you have seen my organized workbench/shop. I have had to do that with the 5-10 options of accessories from home depot. Now possibilities are endless and I am going to be able to squeeze a whole lot more up there in an even more organized fashion. I’m starting with my modeling station as I’m hard into that while I am waiting for face shields to print.

Weekend News:

I store the yard equipment in our basement in the winter, so I don’t put stabil in it or anything and its never an issue. I even leave the gas outside in cans all winter and it has also not been an issue. So when I pulled out the mower this year and it fired right up but then stuttered when I started mowing, I thought “better clean that carb.” I did and it was fine. Then I filled it up using the can that was outside and it ran for a little while and died, did not even give a hint that it would restart again. I c leaned the carb again (before I looked at the plug), fired a little cleaner int the plug socket and it ran while it burned off the carb cleaner and died. So I reluctantly bought a new carb thinking, “no flipping way is this carb bad... it is so simple and it’s clean as a whistle.” Installed it, nothing

I pulled the plug again and actually looked at it. Saw it was wet and black and thought, “could this be my first experience with bad gas?” I texted my best friend, “yo dawg, could bad gas cause my mower not to start at all? Like MF nothing...” You all know the answer is yes, I just needed to hear it from someone else as I had been into diag for too long. Ever feel like that?

After that I felt better, then my wife and I moved 10 cubic yards of soil via shovel and hand carts , 300 yards to the two huge flower beds that my wife just finished building...

Before I hit ya with a couple pics I really have to hand it to my wife. She built those beds almost completely on her own! I bought, cut, and carried the wood...that is it.

We have had chickens for 3-4 years at this point and my wife is forever growing more and more veggies. It’s a really neat time to be semi self reliant particularly with food.

In closing a full and formal Thank You!

This is a duck house I built freehand. It’s nothing special but I’m really proud of it. My boy Lawrence (actually a girl) loves it

Duck house? Those birds in the picture look like chickens?

So we have 11 chickens and a lone duck. We had another but she got eaten by a fox before we we knew what we were doing.

Here is Lawrence:

Chicken/Duck confusion is a common problem here on Oppo

I don’t know your budget or anything, and times are hard for a lot of people now, but an Ender3 can be found on the AliExpress app for around $170 shipped a few times a year. Hope it helps

Do a heat tower and post closer pictures of your layer lines and prints. We might be able to help you fine tune your printer. You can optimize for speed, strength, or resolution, but combining any is exponentially more difficult.

I HIGHLY reccomend a bantamount duct and noctua fans to go with it, it works best with hacked firmware and marlin, but it can be hard to find. If you want it I can send it to you if you drop and email or something.

Is that the Ender3 with the heated build plate for ABS and other materials though? That is the one I would be looking for. Assuming that is $170 USD?

As far as I know all Ender 3's have heated build plates, I got the Pro with the glass plate as well. You need an enclosure for ABS/Nylon and it’s reccomended for most other materials as it evens out the heat a lot. ABS can literally poision you if you suck down those fumes, Nylon just abosrbs moisture out of the air while printing.

Why do you need ABS? PLA+ has been nothing but fantastic for anything I’ve needed, and PETG is better still, theres also TPU for flexable filaments and more exotic stuff that has wood or metal powders. There are a ton of options for printing without an enclosure, and you could even use a cardboard box as a makeshift enclosure, though fumes are still an issue (Seriously, ABS sucks)

Well, what I really j ust need is a weatherable material that can survive outside . Doesn’t PLA gain moisture over time and then warp, etc? What’s PLA+? I’ve used PLA in the past and it does not weather outside.

PLA+ is a really sturdy variant of PLA, holds stresses well, for outside I think PETG has good UV survivability. Nylon for sure will hold up just fine. I’m working my way to being able to print Nylon X and other carbon fiber nylon blend filaments. Almost there.

Tripper, I replied to your email, you caught me as I went to fly my drone and then a new drone skin got in, some motorcycle stuff needed done.. you know how it goes. Anyways, for those of you following along at home, this heat tower looks like it was printed at one temp, I’m not 100% sure on that, but that’s my guess. Bridging (spanning gaps without support) is looking great, layers are consistentish, but workable. personally I’d step down to a .3mm nozzle and .1mm layer height,

This is a solid base to leave it if you don’t want better, but a great place to start improving. Every filament should have a heat tower first to test what temps work well, it’s all really fiddly, but IMHO worth it. Hell I put one of these on my desk unpainted:

And sold it for $45 in 15 minutes to a guy walking by who asked where I got it. I then blew my printers power supply printing the replacement, and then a water pipe burst in the ceiling over my desk at work on a weekend when nobody was there, and crushed all the rest of my 3D models... shit happens lol.

I replied. I agree that the temps probably did not change I dont think the script additions were applied from cura. Trying again!

I have the basic Ender 3, got it off Amazon for $317 CAD after Xmas 2018 (cos I wanted it soon and a place to return it if it was broken, of course then I didn’t open it for a year...)

Regrettably with our dollar in the toilet you might end up paying more now.

Its got the heated build plate as standard and all I’ve printed is ABS cos who wants parts that turn floppy in a hot car. Plus after owning a Nokia 3330 back in the day I’m convinced ABS is second only to adamantium...

Mine’s in the garage so smell isn’t an problem but the cold air means I do have some layer splitting issues so am jerry rigging an enclosure atm.

180 looks pretty good, I’d run 182-184 or so, your bridging test will let you tune retraction settings, then decrease nozzle and layer size until it looks good.

This is my lowest quality filament so I’ll be interested to see what it’s like with something better. Just so I’m not going crazy, the nozzle size is the physical nozzle and the layer is the setting in the slicer, correct?

Kinja'd!!! rockingthe2 > Tripper
04/21/2020 at 19:11

Kinja'd!!!0

Correct. Thanks to you I ended up getting my printer up and running, modified my printer cabinet a lot to retain a decent amount of heat, but not as much as it had and i put in viewing windows as well. I’m on test print #2, then going all night on a model, then a ton of face shields for work and the local hospital.

Also, get some Esun PLA+, cheap and effective. I love that stuff.

Awesome, I have so many frickin hop up parts coming for this thing (via mail and via printer) I must have leveled the thing 30 times because I keep having to take it apart.

I’m making a cabinet out of wood. I have most of the parts cut, I just need to get/cut the glass.

I have had good luck with hatchbox PLA, that green stuff I used is crap but I couldn’t find non neon green in any other brands. Filament is hard to come by at the moment but I’m sure that will get better as we come out of big rona. I’ll get some Esun too.
