We definitely shouldn’t have bailed out the airlines in the US after they’ve spent the past decade using every available dollar to buy back shares. Let someone else buy them out of bankruptcy (can toss in government money there as needed).
Also here in the US, there has been incredibly stupid talk (mostly from small businesses) that they shouldn’t have to keep paying their employees despite taking government money because “there’s nothing for our employees to do”. That was the whole point of the bailout! If there was something for your employees to do, you’d be paying them as normal! We are giving you free money specifically so you don’t fire them even though they aren’t economically productive right now!

Whoever came up with that scheme needs to be sacked.
Here in the US, a lot of airline CEOs have stopped taking any salary at all (of course they're still getting all of their stock comp so don't pity them much).

It's problematic and a bit of a catch-22. Let them fail and you'll be flying china-air from Brussels to Berlin. I'm not sure which sucks more.

Socialize losses, privatize profits, it’s the American way.
Time to break out the guillotines, I hope Yourupeons don’t suffer from the same TEM syndrome afflicting so many in North America.
Seriously, so many of the suit set should be afraid to venture out in public.

I know this has little to do with the labor issues you're talking about, but I’m in favor of a nationalized airline. Flat rates on high traffic routes, treat transportation as a utility instead of a luxury.
Alow other airlines to compete, but provide the base services as an accessible way to get around the country. Similar to how USPS exists alongside FedEx and UPS. Diminish the roll of CEOs in essential transportation.
Of course it would make more sense as a nationalized high-speed rail network, but apparently that’s too complicated for Americans to understand.

i’d be more okay with not letting them fail if they werent so blatantly enriching themselves on my dime...

I was talking to a small business and to qualify for the loan they have to pay like they were last year at the same time. There really isn’t anything for the extra three employees to do and at this point the seasonal workers have decided to not even come back to town until this blows over. So even if the wanted to, there wouldn’t be any actual work for them to do and the employees are not here to employ. It’s a terribly difficult situation.

Amtrak was sorta-kinda aimed at that... but with a long, storied history of mis-management, there’s no real chance for high speed rail in the US.
Plus, if American metropolitan railways are anything to go by, they’d become less than spectacular within a few years.

Oh I know all about the shit that goes on at Amtrak.
Just a dream.

Have you ever flown on a fully nationalized airline other than the UAE ones ? If you have another option, it’s usually preferable to take it. Of course, I’m not advocating this kind of bailout-as- cronyism isn’t good either.
