Its everything we’ve all known for years delivered to the layman in a very dry and lengthy video. To me t he most disappointing part is that The Manual Gearbox Preservation Society or TMGPS didn’t even get a mention, as this could have been a big deal for those guys.

And then there’s this woman, who clearly just doesn’t get it.

I’ve never intentionally bought a car with an autobox, and to this day I do not know how to drive automatic.

I mean IIRC stick shift cars were something like 1.2% of new car sales last year. I think that’s close enough to dead that we can consider the remaining cars zombies.

Honestly at this point I’m a bit surprised they are even an option on economy cars . I think one article I read said that Kia was only getting a ~2.5% take rate on their cheap cars in the US , which hardly seems worth it. Seems like pretty soon sports cars (mostly low power ones) will be the last holdout.

I didn’t even know Volvos were still available with manuals in the US. I thought they dropped them years ago. Audi isn’t making manuals in the US anymore. Had a manual Polo while in Ireland last Fall. It was great.

In the U.K. we get a reduced amount of cars to what’s offered in Europe due to the LHD/RHD thing. But Volvo still do the V40, V60, XC40 and XC60 in manual transmission.

For VW/Audi group. Volvo, etc... it’s a reduced r ange of engines or gearboxes, for Renault it’s a reduced range of cars as they don’t operate in RHD markets, if it’s not going to sell in the U.K. in a sizeable number, it’s not made, U.K. cars tend to get filtered down to Malta and Cyprus where it’s cheaper to import a used car here than at home. They also, like many, do a reduced still offering to Australasia due to lead times of delivery and costs. 

Audi while doing more for automatics than manuals, still offers the manual in the A1, A3, A4, A5, Q2, Q3 and TT.

I've  never bought an automatic either.  I did get one as a gift, as my first car.  It's an excellent Oldsmoblie 88, I'll never get rid of it.  However, I would never intentionally buy a non manual car.

They did not mention that entry level car enthusiasts can and are buying WRX and Civic Si models today, enough that Honda at least devotes the entire line as manual only.

I almost bought a 2017 Chevy SS sedan with 6 speed manual 3 years back, at the time I couldn’t justify 55k for a car without Android auto /apple car play when the Camaro SS2 for 45k had all that tech and more power. It was a fun test drive however, GM had something there if they just tiered it right with tech and performance vs cost. Wish the Dodge charger came in a manual, that be something too.

I do appreciate the fact that CNBC is drawing attention to this. However, they skipped some of the most important factors that influence the death of the manual. They forgot to mention stricter standards for safety and emissions. Emissions being able to improve, even only so slightly, when paired with an automatic such as auto start/stop tech . Probably one of the bigger reasons is safety, being easier to implement features such as collision detection and avoidance and intelligent cruise control on automatics. Even Subaru described their difficulty with applying one of their newest safety features to their manuals.

I think you have to shift it into P when you want to pass on the highway.  It’s counterintuitive

That whole video seemed kind of strange.

There were several points where used phrases like “proponents say dual clutches are faster ” or “many perceive automatics as less efficient. ” That made me feel that most of his research came from forum posts. These things have been tested, go get the numbers and be confident in your research.

And the last statement he made about electric cars making peak torque at any speed (they don't) left a bad taste in my mouth .

It’s like regular driving, but you don’t shift gears. Speed is controlled simply with the gas pedal. It’s quite simple, really.

I don’t want new manuals period. I want to preserve older manuals. Everything from the 4-speed Muncie M-20 to the V160 in the Supra.
