Howdy. Wanted to share some things I wasn’t aware of. There’s a couple real downsides to having multiple GPUs in a PC.
First, IT’S HOT IN HERE! This one I figured, but I didn’t really think it out. Temps in the system went way up, so now my fans are on all the time making noise. The thing I really didn’t think about is that my upstairs where the computer is, is really hot now. As in I’m running the AC up there in April. When the outside is 35F and snowing . My kid woke up on Thursday night (his bedroom is up there) and turned it on, and it’s stayed on, apparently he turned the temp way down last night.
Second, some things just don’t work right. I knew I’d have to sacrifice my extra USB PCI card, there just isn’t enough physical room in there with the other cards. What I didn’t anticipate was that the sheer size of the 2070 Super (takes up 3 slot spaces) would mean that if I didn’t have it in the lowest slot and the 1080 in the top there would be no air gap between them. That’s how I initially set it up, and temps were crazy on the 2070. Moved them and now everything is happy temp wise in there. However, my system doesn’t intialize the card in the lower slot until it’s at Windows, so I can no longer get in the BIOS unless I move a monitor to the 1080. Also, I have a Samsung Odyssey + VR headset. It just does not work anymore, and researching it, that’s common when there are more than one GPUs in a system. That kinda sucks, Asetto Corsa VR is amazing, and I especially enjoy my RC flight sim in VR.
Third, I feel kinda guilty. My kid is the one who games the most, and he’s over there with an (albeit nice) RX580 while I have a GTX1080 sitting here causing issues. So I’m gonna be a nice dad and upgrade my son’s computer with the GTX1080, the 850W Corsair PSU I took out of mine, and a 2TB HDD I have sitting around. Guess I’ll put the RX580 on eBay or something.
It was fun having 24hr at the top of Team Oppo leaderboard. That’s enough for me. I’d imagine I’m going to drop down to 4th or 5th pretty rapidly without that GPU working for me.
My kid is going to freak out.

I’m only running a single GPU, my STRIX GTX 1080 Ti in my desktop and my 4790k , and it’s warming the room decently by itself. Then I went and added my Alienware laptop with its GTX 1660ti when the WUs weren’t coming very often, and it sure has added to the heat more than I expected.
Sadly my motherboard only has one PCIe x16 slot or I would have already bought an RTX 2080 Ti to add into my system. I really need to upgrade the rest of my system before I get a new card though, plus I keep hearing new cards later this year.

the kids rig is in a nice large mid-tower with lots and lots of screeny grill space, like the whole top is mesh, and bottom, and front. Thats the old amd x4 965 build from 2009. Its the kids computer, but its got slots! and any spare card I have goes in there to fold, although weakly, its doing alright! Much better than my system at the moment. But I run that at 75% and it’s not very loud at all, and churns out about 800k a day if both cards get consistent work all day long....they dont.
My main rig is getting some fan upgrades. I would run a second card but as you said, the system temps went up with a more powerful card., I see that too. Its made my CPU aio cooler work harder because its the exhaust fans as well of the whole system. It’s able to handle it, but its bringing in the fresh air.
The GPU creates 200 watts of 75 c air.....im running it at 75%. If I did 100, the gpu fans would be crazy loud....a threshold I dont want to cross. Also the other fans to keep everythign else good would ramp up...another threshold.
Its a great case, the corsair 280x, especially with my airflow mods that work great, but it’s not the right chassis for folding.

35 F? Fresh air intake, exhaust back into open air, use it to cool the entire case too , actually set the fans up optimally, and highly important for marathon efforts like this is installing top tier thermal paste on CPU and GPU.

rtx 3000 debut was delayed and you should expect them fall/winter once things get somewhat back to normal. We also have the new 4k ryzens, last new chip for the am4 socket, and amd’s new gpu coming as well (which should have its own version of tensile “ray tracing”) but that will come after the new RTX 3k .....which will have a bunch more tensor cores for the ray tracing than the 2k’s which wasnt a perfect launch of the tech and will be refined with the new stuff , and a new processor for a perf. boost. Unless you need something now, wait. My 1070 had trouble pushing a 21:9 1440p monitor so I got something now, and its a 2070super is a great choice for that. ....otherwise I would have waited. A 3070 will most likely be equal to a 2080 super today.

My office generally runs a few degrees warmer just with one GPU. It’s quite nice actually, as I leave the thermostat relatively low in the winter. Come summer, it will be a sauna though.

Mwahahaha - time for my return!!!!!
Seriously though this has been a blast - and way to go giving the nice upgrade to your kid, He’ll definitely love it.
Those RX 580 cards are in a strange spot right now - very cheap on ebay ~$100 and decent performers but power hungry. They’re a great bargain if you only need 1080p performance. I almost bought one when I built this rig last fall as they were so cheap but went with a RX 5700 and love it.

Multi gpu for gaming has been dead for a few years now. It requires a lot of extra effort on the game developers’ end and it’s not at all worth it to them when most gamers are on console. PC gaming is still somewhat niche, and then multi gpu is a niche within that niche. Even when it does improve your average fps it makes frame pacing worse, and there are plenty of games where it decreases performance.
Multi gpu support may make a comeback in the next few years since it looks like Nvidia, AMD, and Intel are all working on gpus with multiple chips on the same package. Nvidia actually made their new tile based sli rendering method available briefly on a few driver versions.

I don ’t even have it set up to game with SLI, or even a monitor plugged into the second card. It was purely to get ahead of Jminer, Lol.

Yeah, I’m trying to decide if I should upgrade my 4790k to a Ryzen 9 3900x now or wait until later this year currently.

Im using a 3700x, 8 core....and im never really using 8 cores. It’s a waste today for me, but, the next concole platforms are 8 core and the games will use them, and when ported to PC will use 8 cores if available. I’m ready for that and im also 46, which means im not really gonna game tonnes and look for upgrades. Each system lasts 10 years for me. So, I’m good for ten years at least on this build.
the 3900x is cool but just overkill for now. I don’t know your use case. But it will blow your mind when you get it.

Yah I had 2 gtx 970s in sli and BOY OH BOY did they get hot. I also had bad overclocks on the cards and I live in a small room with the windows often closed, so yeah I feel yah on the heat. I have since switched to hybrid or AIO cooling and lemme tell yah, my room stays much cooler now.
