Whelp, this will be fun. The wife is most definitely in a high risk group, and she has come down with a fever. There is virtually no way she can have the covid based on her exposure (or lack thereof) over the last three weeks. However, upon consultation with our doctor, we will be moving her to the office on the airbed and assigning her the adjacent bathroom.
The daughter is already making plans. Also, she has been making masks, as the county has now told us we have to use them when going to the store. Which is fine. I’ll eventually have to go into the lab, and I can probably grab a couple of proper masks when I do, if I can remember where I put them.
Are we having fun yet?

Oh, no. Best of luck to you and yours. Let the Oppoverse know if we can help.

Send booze. I’ll be sharing a bathroom with a 14 year old.

I have been making some fairly serious masks. Can I mail you a few?

That is very generous of you, and I want you to know how much I appreciate that. But my daughter got very serious about downloading patterns and making masks this week. I think I need to wear them.
It’s great to know that Opponauts take care of their own.

It’s good. I’ll be thinking about you.

Does she have elastic for the ears and wire for the nose bridge? I can send some of that along.

Yup! She takes pride in her crafts.

What plans have you been using? We've been able to avoid going out altogether and getting groceries delivered, but we're going tonnage to reintegrate at some point and we'll need to make some for me, wife, and kids.

Damn. Good luck

There was a run on quarter-inch elastic at the beginning of the difficulties and it can be very difficult to find now. And one of the challenges has been coming up with a type and grade of wire that works well if that’s part of the style. I have some 18-ga solid core copper wire that works very well. If she winds up having any trouble sourcing those things, give me a shout.

No plan, really, just making them to try and mimic the paper masks. Like I was telling Chariot, the elastic and the wire can be difficult to source. I’d be happy to send you some, or even to make you some masks if you like. Email me at oliphant.chuckerbutty@gmail.com if I can lend you a hand.

I took pictures showing all of the steps. I could put those in an online slide show for you.

Thanks.

Again, very generous. I will most definitely keep that in mind!

You know, you can do that slide show in Kinja and make a how to post.

what have you been making for masks?

I really appreciate that. I showed my wife the picture of yours, and she said she had something similar in mind. We’re extremely lucky in that my wife worked from home fill time before this, so nothing has changed for her. My job has let me work from home until May 1 so far. Our kids are 4 and 6, and the older one has intermittent distance learning for kindergarten. So we’re lucky to have the family together and safe and employed. But dear God is it a lot. Our jobs are understanding and aren’t holding anybody to 9-5 , but managing jobs and kids and dog is a ton. If we don't get around to making something, I might be in touch. Again, thank you so much for the offer.

I could try that. I was also thinking about a Google Slides thingie.

Keep the email address. I am HAPPY to send you a couple of grownup-size masks. Seriously: no problem. If you set out to make them on your own, the quarter-inch elastic can be hard to find, and a good wire solution for over the nose as well. I’m happy to mail you some of each of those, also, if you like. Let me know. Be well.

Whats the fabric and do you know how well it filters?

Cotton weave, two layers, and the one I wear, I insert a Level 1 paper surgical mask in between. Would you like me to mail you one?

Rusty Vandura is a solid dude. I have a bunch of vintage camera stuff he sent me for my STEM classes.

Yep. Fever is waving in and out, down this morning from 101 last night. It’s probably a cold of some sort, but we’re being prudent.

I just spoke with my daughter, and she said that indeed she ran out of material in the house to properly finish her masks. So, she gave permission to outsource production. In that case, I would happily take you up on your offer of masks. Your look like good construction. I would feel irresponsible putting on a bandana and calling that fulfilling my societal responsibility.
Email coming shortly.
