[Update]

That was fast! We were in and back out in about 15 minutes. Just enough time to post here and listen to a little Lenny Kravitz before she came walking out the door. We’ve been to that clinic before, so they didn’t even bother with the normal insurance verification BS that takes half an hour.

The doctor put in three stitches and told her to come back in seven days if she still had stitches to remove (hint, hint). She was the last patient of the day and the nurse was hot on her heels to leave . We were told that the chance of pickin g up COVID while she was there was really small since everyone was masked and only the nurse touched any of the building surfaces (doors, doorknobs, etc.). My wife stripped down as soon as we walked in the door (woohoo!) and made a beeline for the shower to get clean. I grabbed the clothes and put them straight into the washer.

I hope we’re in the clear.

Thanks for the support, Oppo.

Kinja'd!!!

After 30 days of avoiding contact with other people, we are now going to the front lines. My wife managed to cut herself while chopping onions for dinner. We treated it with elevation and pressure, but the cut is deep enough that it wouldn’t stop bleeding. She can still move it and the cut isn’t on the joint or where it could have cut a tendon. It’s just deep and may have hit a blood vessel. So, here we are at a walk-in clinic.

Before speaking with the curbside attendant, we got her all masked up and ready to go inside. I have to wait in the car until they’re done. I have a mask for when she comes out. We’ll probably have to quarantine her for a couple of weeks just to be sure. She’s a demanding patient and doesn’t like being cooped up, so this isn’t going to be fun. Maybe I need to set up a cot for her in the storage building so she can sleep out there and wander around the back yard at will. :)

More to come, I’m sure.

I had a funny freak accident years ago where I broke a plate in the sink and it cut my little finger. The shot before the stitches was unbelievably painful ha. After a day I realized I couldn’t move it and had to have tendon surgery which was quite an undertaking and that finger still isn’t quite right.

We’re thankful it wasn’t a tendon. Now that she had the shot to numb it , she’s a lot more pleasant to be around. We have to stay on top of the ibuprofen so the throbbing doesn’t come back.

I’ve saved myself many a times with butterfly bandages. Had a pyrex explode in my hand a year or so ago. I instinctually gripped down when it blew up. C ut my thumb deep enough to see a tendon. Hardest part is getting the blood to recede long enough to get the bandage on properly. I feel comfortable doing it to myself, but not another person. Healed up well, but my thumb is shaped a bit different now on account of the scar tissue. Still work, though!

Glad you were able to get her in and out quickly.

My wife started the process of getting a tooth implant long before the outbreak, but she has several more steps of different visits to the dentist and oral surgeon before they can actually put in the new tooth. She’s already wondering how the hell she’s going to accomplish the remaining steps and if there’s any time limit on when they need to occur. It will be...i nteresting.

Oh yeah the tendon was miserable - had to have it in a cast for (I can’t remember how long, a week maybe) all while trying to keep it completely relaxed so as not to break the impossibly small sutures. And then mostly  Immobilized for weeks. All my cars were manual then too so I couldn’t drive either.

We used glass feeding tubes in one of our rat studies. Like you, I had one explode in my hand when I was trying to tighten the cap. It cut my ring finger to the bone from the tip, across the first joint to the middle phalanx. I was lucky that the glass went in from the side, so no tendons were cut, but it did sever the nerve. The tip of that finger is still numb.

If you’ve never seen a glass feeding tube, here’s one to look at. We used them to feed a liquid diet and accurately track consumption.

Did they give her the tool kit that they used to put the stitches in?  The forceps(?) are super handy for taking the stitches out when they are done.  I had to get a couple stitches in my pinkie finger last fall.  Managed to stab the tip while trying to slice up a kiwi with a dull knife.

Dull kni ves are dangerous knives! I had to argue with my mother-in-law about that one. To prove my point, I took away the knife she was using to bludgeon tomatoes and sharpened it for her. She learned how easy a sharp knife passes through a tomato and how much better the results can be. I’m sure they’re as dull as ever by now since she stores them loose in a drawer.

W e have a pretty comprehensive first aid kit with some tools. If nothing else, I’ll go after them with a pair of needlenose pliers from t he garage. :D
