As I was zipping up the freeway at 80 MPH I was annoyed by the guy in the left lane puttering along at 75 in his Tahoe or Suburban. I did check out his plates and they were standard, and I didn’t see any unusual antennas, but I did notice that he was riding on black steelies. As I overtook him in the #2 lane, something I don’t like doing, his vehicle let out a couple of those cop chirps. Fuck. I dialed it back to 70 and he took off, which was just fine by me. I mean I wasn’t doing anything too reckless, just a nice even 20 over on an empty highway...
Oh, and southern Illinois is burning:

yah, who else
rides on steelies these days? I recently learned from Oppo: No roof rack?

Who else rides on steelies? People that want to look like cops, that’s who.
I knew about the roof rack trick, but on a black car it’s kind of hard to tell; it’s a lot easier on white vehicles, and especially when looking at the front; from the back it’s a bit trickier.

I’m chicken - I would not have passed any black Suburban/Tahoe/Exp until I got a good look at the driver and the inside of the car.

I will admit that i t was a calculated risk. I was running on cruise control and exercising proper lane discipline, so it’s not like I was a hazard to myself or others. I also figured that cops really don’t want to be bothered pulling people over these days, especially petty little things like a little extra speed. If I was weaving in and out of traffic and cutting people off, yeah, go ahead and pull me over. This guy was probably a supervisor or something, and although he could have called someone to get me, figured that a quick beep like that would chill me out, which it did. Funny, I didn’t get all stressed like I normally do when dealing with a cop on the road.

haha! Those chirps would’ve stressed me out but good! You lucky!
I get stressed
passing
marked cops
doing the speed limit. I creep by them just waiting for them to light me up.

You don’t count :) I
wouldn’t have been fooled due to
your paint scheme.

I do, largely.

I don’t doubt it. My 98 Forester was on steelies and I have them for my Transit
. But
I can’t imagine a late model Suburban can even be ordered with them.

Running 80 on an interstate in Illinois got you chirped at by an unmarked car - sounds weird. Is this near St. Louis?
I guess he was just upset you were passing him.

The fire was across the river in E. St. Louis IL, but I was in St. Louis MO, heading back to the city up I 55.
I think he was just trying to keep me in check. It’s not like anything would be done if I reported him for camping out in the #1 lane, even if he was doing 75. HEY, OFFICER, THAT LANE IS FOR PASSING!

Well, if you were in Missouri, that might be a different story. I’ve only driven through, and it was usually at night.
The state I saw mentioned was Illinois, and I just never saw the state police in Illinois show any reaction to speeds if they weren’t MORE than 10 over, so being at 10 over in your post made.

Good. The scheme was my goal after all.
