Actually, can you imagine party lines today? It would be just like online gaming.

At my last job we ran a Mumble server which was basically a big party line for the developers. My first day on the job Slack was running at high speed, people were talking nonstop on Mumble, and I wondered what in the world I w as getting myself into.

But, since everyone was remote, it was useful to have multiple ways to keep abreast of what was going on.
