Recently paid $350 on a whim for this Gary Fisher Tassajara and Trek so my wife and I could do mountain bike things. The Fisher needed a new tube and I had to disassemble and clean and re-lube the Shimano Deore quickshifters but it works absolutely brilliantly. My last bike was a 2004-era Walmart Mongoose XR75 so to say this is a step up is a severe understatement.
Bonus: they both fit in the S portcross!

I had a late 90s Tassajara for a few years. Great bike!

My last bike was a 1993 Trek 850 with CroMoly frame, so I’m looking forward to just about anything now :D
But now with the internet, owning a bike has turned into a 40-hour-a-week hobby, so I’m intimidated to even look at anything right now.

I had a 1999 Specialized Stumpjumper for off-road use. After riding a friend’s dual susp bike down some technical stuff, I bought a used Scott
. Learning curve trying to catch up on 20 yrs of bike tech has been
steep!

I won’t give name to numerous things making you believe that.
My only suggestion if you explore newer bikes is to look outside the Trek/Specialized/Giant/etc bubble and buy used. Even with nominal price of shipping included , a bike that actually fits and was responsibly set up will bring years more enjoyment whenever you feel compelled to take it out. I’d be more than willing to show you how to measure yourself. Then find a bike and fit it to your current skill and flexibility level.
No 40 hr /wk commitment or aggro workup to be core enough.

I want to get out and ride! Our weather has been crap here and the trails are rather muddy/snowy still to get out on them. slightly related but I also need to sell a ton of old bike components.

I took my son for a 10 mile ride yesterday, all trail. He was spent. The little turd tho, he’s so darn skinny that he can go up hill’s like a scalded monkey.

I quite love it. Weather permitting I’m going to hit the single track after work tomorrow!

To be fair, almost every hobby comes across as excessive based on the hardcore enthusiasts. I just feel bad that I live about 15 minutes from a world-class singletrack park and haven’t even ridden a mountain bike since high school in the 90s.
I think, like you said, the best bet is find one of the local rich guys who bought a bike a couple years ago for $1k and is ready to dump it for $200 just to save the selling hassle ;)

If that trail isn’t closed it should be. Excellent time to get a bike lined up for next year though. Just keep in mind wheels are the most important thing stuck onto the bike.
Now that I have a rough area/trail would you mind telling me how tall you are? $200 is going to buy a whole lot of fun. It won’t buy lightness or fancy suspension. Get your BFH hammer warmed up too.
