Bonus: finally managed to find and purchase fog light covers. These things are nearly impossible to find. Here is the driver’s side installed vs the passenger as it was when I bought it.

I don’t know why, but I’ve been seriously putting off working on the S-Type R. I pulled it into the garage some time last year (March 2020) and have just been letting it sit...

Well no more! Today is the day! (Probably) We had a cold snap that we are just now recovering from, so with evening temps in the low 60s and the mosquitoes not quite in full force yet, I feel like now is the time.

Primary Objectives

The Jag has two glaring problems: the upper radiator hose balloon and the half flayed serpentine belt. As such, primary objectives are:

All cooling hoses I can get my hands on*

Main water pump

Serpentine belt

Supercharger belt

Serpentine belt tensioner

Brakes, all (front, rear, parking)

*Hoses on this car are both numerous and seemingly difficult to get a hold of both literally and figuratively. I bought what I can and will address any dangerous looking ones when I see them.

Secondary Objectives

The rest of this is “while I am in there” stuff that I want to do. None of it is screaming out to be done, but all of it would be good to get the most out of this car.

Change supercharger oil

Idler pulley (shit I forgot to buy one... I think)

Fix EGR

Supercharger water pump

Air filter

Cabin air filter

Spark plugs

Performance intake

Brake fluid flush

Horn replacement

Lug nut replacement

A couple of those are “no brainers” as I’ll have access or have to remove the parts anyway when I’m doing the cooling and belts. Some stuff like the ERG, cabin filter, and plugs may be put off until another day. I want this thing to wake up from its slumber an absolute monster, but also it isn’t going to be 100% until I do the rear struts so... heh.

I am ready to drive the wheels off it, so... LETS GET TO WORK!

Double bonus pic: Dog B being very confused as to why I moved HIS chair outside. (I was shampooing the rugs)

Speaking of, today’s NPoCP is an F-T ype. Certainly gives me warm feels, especially with that real shifter.

Sounds exciting. It will all be worth it when it gets back on the road. Have you got ahold of most of the belts and hoses you need or will you have to improvise a bit?

In a good color too (I love a contrasty white car).  Still can’t bring myself to part with $46k for that though....  Not that it isn’t worth it, my brain just won’t let me think of that as an OK car price.

Belts yes, hoses TBD.  The supercharger belt was a bit of a guess, but if I got it wrong I can put the old one back on and change it when/if I upgrade the pulley.  There are like... 8 part numbers for that belt and I have no idea why.  Actually every part on this car has a ton of different part numbers and they don’t always resolve to the same part...

That sounds about like what you signed up for by buying this thing. I imagine just getting those foglight housings was far far more effort than you let on. Let us know how it goes.

Give me another two months of quarantine and I can probably manage 4600.

Sounds like a good day of working on cars built by blokes. Speaking of which, I’ve got the Jag parts department shelf of my garage  full of stuff I need to put on the Jag (maintenance and rear brakes), but the Pajero keeps calling me. I’m going to do some XE maintenance over the next week, unless I’m unable to part myself from playing with my new PC parts.

It was! My body shop ordered two different sets, neither of which fit. After far more research than should have been required, I finally got a part number BUT no one would say one way or the other if they’d fit. They LOOKED right, but some sites said they worked with my car, others said they’d only work with cars with adaptive cruise. I even contacted a few sellers and all of them told me they wouldn’t fit. I found them for a good price out of the UK and took a chance, figuring I could sell them on eBay if they didn’t fit. Turns out they did!

While I'll always love red cars, after daily driving a bright red Vette for a couple of years I've developed an appreciation for fast cars in boring colors that attract less casual attention.

Not a bad life you’re living.

If we ever make it out to NM again , I’d love to hit some trails alongside that Pajero.

That sounds like a heroic gamble there.

I went through something similar but like way way less hard when I tried to buy a phone case for my new phone. My phone is a Moto G6+ sold as a M0 to G7+ for some sort of reason involving a new generation of phones. Mine was a carryover so I had to figure out the di scre pa ncy before I knew why none of the cases I bought fit. I ultimately found out from the phone’s settings menu not being changed over. It was literally just a new box.

I could see that. I had a red Challenger as a rental a while back and people engaged with me a non-zero number of times. Didn’t care for it.  I assume cops would be similarly interested.  The bright blue Volvo seems to confuse people.  Bright and sporty looking, but also a Volvo...

That was the biggest down side to my former C4.  Whenever I encountered mustang on the road, there was a better than 50% chance the numbnuts behind the wheel was going to try to race me when I all I wanted to do was change lanes.  That particular aspect of Corvette ownership got old quick.

Given you’re a Jaaaaag owner, why wouldn’t you just have your mechanic take care of it while you play tennis at the club?

:-p

Well you can only not pay so many mechanics before you run through all the good ones.  Also I took most of their tools “on loan” so.... ;-)
