These two large tacos small open-face burrito s have “meat” made fro m mushrooms, onions, and none other than textured soy protein. I even keep the stuff in a Pinterest-approved jar thanks to my wife’s decorating & organizational skills.

It’s mostly flavorless. I treat it like a seasoning sponge. I start with the mushrooms & onions, then add TSP & water, soy & hoisin sauces for umami, plus a bunch of taco meat seasonings. Onion & garlic powder, regular & smoked paprika, chili or c hipotle powder , oregano, cumin, coriander, sage, salt & pepper.

So overall, were the tacos/burritos good?

Isn’t the TSP basically like dried tofu?

They’re really good, I make them often.

TSP is actually made using a similar heated extrusion process as Cheetos, but with soy flour instead of cornmeal.

Where do you get them?  Any grocery store? What section are they in?

TSP tacos are my oldest trick. I actually made taco salad with it last night.

The texture is good (I do not really remember if it’s close to beef or not, but I do like the texture), and it absorbs seasoning very well. Throw your favorite seasoning at it and the tacos are amazing. My very pro meat friend in Mississippi  really likes my tacos and subs TSP for beef on occasion.

TSP = Tofu? Or no?

I thread the line between meat and “meat” - I’ve had the “ground beef” tofu from Trapper Joe’s and honestly it’s good, IMO - I don’t feel like I’m missing anything.

In its raw uncooked form it tastes like vaguely beany sawdust. In its taco meat form it tastes like taco meat. Magic!

Okay, I’ll have to at least try it. What brands do you prefer?

Depends on the store. Many regular grocery stores have it in the packages near the vari ous hippie flours, or most hippie markets have it in the bulk section. I do the bulk stuff at MOM’s . It’s mad cheap, like maybe $2-3/lb, and a pound is a lot.

TSP and TVP are essentially the same thing but TVP is a trademark of Archer Daniels Midland, the big ag company.

Thanks dude. I had just ordered Bob’s Re d Mill steel cut oats from Amazon because Walmart has been cleared out for a few weeks. I’ll give the TSP a try.
