I am a huge fan of David Lynch’s arguably flawed adaptation of Frank Herbert’s remarkable novel Dune . Despite the problems with story compression, omissions, and a director who had !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the film has a look and feel that is all its own, a strange futuristic Industrial Revolution vibe that I suppose might be called steampunk. Perhaps Lynch’s disinterest in making a science fiction movie worked to the film’s advantage. Director Denis Villeneuve has bravely taken up the task of creating a new Dune movie (I never have seen the miniseries from 2000), and Vanity Fair has a few early looks at the characters.

Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Liet Kynes. In the book, Kynes was a white dude, played by Max von Sydow. The new film works to expand the roles of women.

Granted, these are a minuscule sampling of what Villeneuve’s film will present, but here I see characters and costumes that would be at home in any science fiction film ever made. Nothing looks particularly unique or interesting. Looking at the shots of Halleck and Duke Le to, I suppose they were going for a futuristic suit of armor to reflect a Medieval feudalism. Okay, I get that, but I’m still not impressed. It looks like Excalibur in space. I desperately hope this will be as faithful an adaptation as possible, a tall order for such a deeply complex story.

I was just reading about this on io9.

Man, I really really  hope this is as good as it looks to be. Dune was huge for teenage me.

Well, it was   the 1980s.

(Book was written in 1965, so yeah, probably)

The first movie that came out in 84 sucked. The miniseries was better. I don’t know that anyone can make Herbert’s fantasy come to life properly on a screen. It’s like a fevered dream that makes so much sense until you try to tell it to people, and then it goes poof.

The one thing they take license with that nevertheless bugs me is they always have Fremen walking around in stillsuits with uncovered heads. It’s for dramatic purposes, I know, but still.

Lynch’s Dune succeeded on visual world building and generating otherness and strangeness... Those are good enough reasons for it to remain a classic, even if the source material was semi-butchered... As you say, this new production looks very bland at the moment. Of course, with CGI post production there’s a possibility the environments and set dressing may come a long way from these production stills... But the costuming   is indeed a bit uninspired.

The pics don't do much for me but the casting sounds awesome so I'm excited and hopeful. Especially love Zendaya.

I’m super excited for it, but, unfortunately almost every single person they’ve cast looks completely different than the characters I imagined the several times I’ve read the books, so their treatment had better be pretty dang amazing or I’m worried I’m not going to like it. We shall see.

I’ve read all of the books, like pre dune and post Dune. Very cool story. I do not get a good vibe from the initial information on this series. the 2000 mini series was not good.

Lets go back a few thousand years to the robot wars when AI almost wiped out the human race.

Lady Jessica doesn’t look old enough to be Paul’s mother.

I read the book for the first time last year, and couldn’t help but see all of Lynch’s actors in the roles. Some people are complaining about the lack of powerful female characters in the book, but as I remember it, Paul would never have been successful without his mother standing beside him.

I don’t hate  much and don’t like the word , but I absolutely hated Lynch’s version. I’ve tried to watch it 2 or 3 times and I don’t think I’ve made it halfway. I’ve vowed to never try again.

Any new version would have to be better. T he fact it’s Villeneuve bodes so well. Big, big, fan. Can’t wait.

I may have a better opinion of Lynch’s movie since I watched it many times before I read the book. So I appreciate both on their own merits, rather than worrying about what the movie got wrong. The movie for me is sort of like Fifth Element . It’s really not a very good movie, but the look is remarkable. It’s one of my favorites.

Both things you mention are valid points. My biggest problem was with what ttyymmnn touched on,  story compression.

Well back then I hadn’t read it and I was a kid, I can’t get too upset about accuracy as long as I enjoy watching it. Plus, I love you glow y eyed Sean Young!

An oppressed community with a valuable commodity, a big empire that comes to take it, a “savior” who fucks it all up ... who could have foreseen something like that?

I mean, did they n ever see Lawrence of Arabia?!

The word *jihad* is actually defined in the book. As is planetary ecology.

So you take the bad times, and build the good.
