Folding refers to the way human protein folds in the cells that make up your body. We rely on the proteins to keep us healthy and they assemble themselves by folding. But when they misfold, there can be serious consequences to a person’s health.
Folding@home is a project focused on disease research. The problems we’re solving require so many computer calculations – and we need your help to find the cures!
It’s distributed computing. They have large computational science modeling and they divvy up the work and send it out to computers all over the world. They’re working on Parkinson’s disease, various cancers, and COVID-19. The app uses CPU and GPU and takes full advantage of the computing power you have. You can throttle back the work, or even pause it entirely, when you need your CPU/GPU cycles for something more important like Castle Wolfenstein.

I passively thought you guys were doing an origami contest or something. No kidding.

Also, something I learned this morning is that your first 10 “Work units” or I guess the folding operations assigned to you, will be of a much lower score than the ones that follow. I don’t understand hwo they calculate bonuses and multipliers, but my score went from well under 100k yesterday to over 250k this morning.

Got 2 machines up and running this morning, keep promoting it.

The bonus value of work units doesn’t apply until you complete 10. It seems to be structured around speed of completion (for the size of the work unit), and constant work.

This has a good explanation . https://foldingathome.org/support/faq/points/
Essentially they benchmark a WU on an older machine and then if your new rig can do it faster you get multiples of that base rate.

So can we look for you on Team Oppo?

That’s approximately how I’d assumed things were working. That if your machine is fast, they give you bigger, more difficult WUs. So machines that are hecka fast pull down big points off relatively few WUs.

Coolio. I’ll keep pushing it until the moderators tell me to back off.

Its also just a factor of how much faster current rigs are than the benchmark rig.
Right now mine is cranking away on a WU that has a base rate of 15, 396 and will be done in about 1:45 and the estimated points are 138,437

I thought it was something like that as well just thinking, guys! I only have so many clothes and I’m not refolding them for fun.

Hey big kudos for putting this together. I had been folding GPU only for PCMR (iced98lx) for a few weeks but this inspired me to flip the switch on CPU folding which exposed some issues in my overclock. I got to re-overclock, set fan curves etc, all with “Humanity” as my excuse to the wife. Now rocking a rock solid OC with much better temps than previously seeing.
Basically, I fell to 11th while I was dorking around but I’m determined to maintain top 10 with a single machine/GPU, lets see if I can!

2 of my cooling fans decided their bearings were going to eat themselves at the same time (how is that possible?), so I’m out for a while. fans are ordered, so hopefully I won’t fall to last place in the time being........

That is all very interesting. Right now, I’m being a bit more pedestrian, looking at the rankings and the big numbers and recruiting. If there were some sort of analysis you felt inclined to produce or explain, that would be great.

Coolio. I helped my brother, Ttyymmnn, order GPUs from eBay for his boys’ gaming PCs. They’re immense and don’t fit in the cases. One seller graciously agreed to accept the card, minus the shipping. The other is a complete d**k and also sent a grubby part. I can’t even test the thing. So Ttyymmnn is mailing it to me because it will fit in my large Precision case, and I’ll use the save-the-world excuse to press it into service. It’s an Nvidia 1060/6GB. We’ll see what it does.

It’s good. Ain’t this fun?

Got my two Dell Precisions, my old iMac, and my S urface Book all folding for the team! Didn't realize how many spare machines I had sitting around. I could get the old Mac Pro going, but it's really power hungry.
Been thinking of spending my stimulus on a new Precision tower... Might actually have to do it. Probably not though, I already have enough computers and work provides me with one.

Cool. Thanks for chipping in! I’m upgrading my GPU because reasons, but it’ll be fun to see what it does.

I just added a passkey to my username and it reset my points to 0. There does seem to be a large passkey bonus though. Before my newest machine was saying 20,000 points a day from GPU but now it’s saying 130,000 from the GPU.
