Interesting to think that smartphones could save our economy, our healthcare system, and our freedom.

Kinda how the Tile app works, but without GPS .

Instead of asking the T ile community “where’s my thing? ” it just says “was I near an infected thing?”

Is Bluetooth distance aware? i.e. what if I have a really good Bluet ooth signal and I’m 40ft away from someone, across the street, for 20 min. Will it know the difference if I was across the table from them?

We need it. Though frankly I’m not terrified of the big brother version either.

Also today’s SMBC/538 collaboration shows that webcomics don’t have to be quick and simple:

Bluetooth low energy’s theoretical range is around 300', so that’s the cap, and practically speaking it should be much lower.

I know Apple is doing work with range finding based on return time  for their new AR LIDAR technology in the iPad Pro, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they use some clever tricks to filter out weak Bluetooth signals, but maybe it’s better to be safe and capture them all.

Yeah, the modeling problem is a real pain. I see people saying “the lockdown is unnecessary” because the deaths seem to be tracking lower than feared, rather than “the lockdown is saving lives” which should be the real takeaway.

The countries that have tried them so far have found them to be pretty ineffective - low uptake rate and prone to false positives. That’s leaving aside the privacy issues, which can be solved by the method your link gives or various others - the Apple/Google joint effort on this uses a very similar approach to the one in the cartoon .

It’s clearly not going to be a single solution that solves the problem, but considering that right now the only bullet in our arsenal is killing the economy a s collateral damage , I’m excited that there may be a more granular tool on the way.

And I really want to get out this summer and enjoy it. I spend all winter each year yearning for open air driving in my Jeep; missing a summer entirely would be too cruel to imagine.

Although, admittedly, dying from the corona virus would be worse.
