Auditions are coming up at the end of the month for my students entering high school in the fall, so I recorded the audition music since we can’t meet in person (we are doing online lessons, but it’s not the same) . Yes, this was recorded in my bathroom, which desperately needs a remodel, but it’s the best sounding room aside from the kitchen.
I hope I make the band.....

Sounding good! I was just messing with farscythe by posting some bop and it sounds pretty much the same.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Ok, maybe not the same but still good!

Very Nice! I bet the kids appreciate you going to such lengths to help them.
Also you’re pretty damn good at the trumpet. Makes me want to go pull the trombone out of the basement and see if I can make it sound halfway decent.

I always wished I could play jazz, but I never took the time to learn it. My brain just doesn’t work that way.

Thanks. I’ve only been at it for close to 45 years.....

I wish I could play any instrument in any style. I tried for years but my brain always said “P lay the notes exactly as written with no emotion or style”.

I can hold my own in a big band section, playing third or fourth. But I can’t play lead, and I can’t play jazz, so I leave that up to other people. As Dirty Harry said, “A man’s got to know his limitations.”

I know it seems strange to get a compliment from a stranger on the internet - if I recall you play for a symphony so you have a lot more validation already than I can give you - you’re genuinely awesome at it!

Thanks. Yes, I play professionally, though not much these days. I really miss it. Hoping this corona bullshit blows over soon.

Have fun listening to a whole bunch of eighth grade approximations of that.

I only had two 8th grade students, and I’m only teaching one of them online. And he just got braces at the end of spring break. However, my high schooler is also playing this, as are my 8th grade twins. Everybody is playing basically the same piece. 8th graders only have to play the theme and first “variation” (they’re not really variations, and the music is really rather poorly written). If you want to be considered for the top band, you have to play the whole thing. And you have to record it in one take, like I did.

No pressure!
I remember in high school doing playing tests with a cassette recording in a practice room.

This took three takes to get one that I was happy with. And there are still a couple of little things I’d like over, but nothing major. I’ve played so little in the last few weeks. I sound really good for about 10 minutes then I’m shot.

I’m a Maple Man Keel kind of guy myself. But you'd definitely do well in the marching band.
*The Maple Leaf Forever, Men of Harlech, Keel Row. Throw in the Game of Thrones theme, Jurrasic Park, Pirates of the Carribean, or the Final Countdown for inspection

Wait, a trumpet has a little slide thingy? WHY DID I NEVER NOTICE THAT BEFORE? It’s like a mini trombone!

Well, the trumpet and trombone are related in more ways that it seems. More info here .

Ttyymmnn needs three of these so his boys can fight room to room in the house during COVID quarantine.

At our age, that’s a pretty good average. Sorry, it was too easy.
... but nothing major.
I’d like to think that was an intentional pun! Anyway, I’d say you still got it, but you do deserve an actual studio.

I was forced to love the baritone, I will make others love it too. Low brass for the win!

I have an idea percolating in my head, and I’m wondering if this could work.
What if you could get a number of us the parts for a piece of music, something from a wind ensemble, whatever? And if you could get parts to those of us that sign up for them, and we could each play our parts at a certain tempo you designate. Then, we send the recordings and they are made into tracks and combined into a performance. It could probably be done with Garage Band on a Mac. Then we would have a recording by T he Oppositelock Quara ntine Players.

That’s a great idea, but I have no idea how to pull something like that off. Until then, here’s the Austin Quarantine Quartet performing a suite of Easter music. We recorded this, and then played it live for grandparents.
