Folding refers to the way human protein folds in the cells that make up your body. We rely on the proteins to keep us healthy and they assemble themselves by folding. But when they misfold, there can be serious consequences to a person’s health.
Folding@home is a project focused on disease research. The problems
we’re solving require so many computer calculations – and we need your
help to find the cures!
It’s distributed computing. They have large computational science modeling and they divvy up the work and send it out to computers all over the world. They’re working on Parkinson’s disease, various cancers, and COVID-19. The app uses CPU and GPU and takes full advantage of the computing power you have. You can throttle back the work, or even pause it entirely, when you need your CPU/GPU cycles for something more important like Castle Wolfenstein.

V ery helpful. I thought it was some sort of laundry competition.

Good. Seems like a worthwhile endeavor, and lots of folks have lots of computing power sitting idle these days.

Well, that’s no good! I can’t tease you in the progress reports!

How often do I need to complete TPS reports?

It’s idle for a reason, I’m cheap and don’t want to convert electricity (CA energy is pricey) to heat my office ....but your regular posts about folding are getting me closer to putting my i7 to work for a good cause.

I’m going to do some numbers to see what this is costing our household. But your point is well taken. I look at it as donating electrons to the cause. Also, this is a good fit for our Oppo community because GPU envy and reasons.
I think lots of folks are going to be surprised when they get their next couple of PG&E bills because they’re spending so much time in their homes using electricity.

It seems I was stuck idle for a while this morning, F@H wasn’t distributing the work units. But now after pausing and restarting, I’ve got the CPU cracking again.

“What is folding?" When things bend.

But with that car, you can’t tell. Have you joined Team Oppo yet?

We recently watched that movie. The first half is great, then it goes downhill to a stupid ending.

Yeah, and while you were idle, RustyVandura almost crept up and overtook you.

Remember folks, your graphics card is vastly more productive than CPU and is a lso that per watt. My gtx 1 070 makes 4x the points of my 3700x cpu at just 60 more watts.

60 watts is not insignificant. But yes.
Are you on The Team yet?

I loved the ending it is just as ridiculous as the beginning.
![]() 04/12/2020 at 12:42 |

Well. My 3700x is 108 watts full out. So 160 watts on the card isn't much overall, especially when my old x4-965 quad-core cooked at 240 watts and made hardly and work in comparison
Ive been on overc lockersclub.com team since 2004. May change over, but as long as points are made that’s what matters.

I agree, ridiculous throughout, but it just kind of turns ugly midway and I could do without it.

It’s good. I actually got out the amm eter and took a measurement. Something like 240 watts at full steam. When school ever opens again, if it ever opens again, I’m going to do my folding at school and let the taxpayers foot the electricity bill.

That’s very much how I look at this. I’m making a donation via my electricity bill.

Lol. Careful. Long ago when folding was still new, a Stanford student covertly installed it on every box in the campus computer labs. Got caught. In trouble.

Nope. One box in my classroom, nobody will notice.

Well maybe YOUR graphics card does. My old NVidia GeForce GT 640 doesn’t appear to do as much work as my Athlon X4 630 CPU.
EDIT: was looking at the PPD/Credits for work done ... and actually my GeForce does generate more credit and PPD than the Athlon X4. I mistakenly initially went by how long it takes to complete a job.
