Late comer NKato talked a big game and then delivered, joining late and leaping to the head of the pack in mere hours. Asked whether he was trying to cause GPU envy among his teammates, NKato replied, “No, I just want to make them all jealous.” jkminer enjoyed a brief lead, then succumbed to NKato. Meanwhile, further back in the pack, HammerheadFistpunch consults with Nibby about a specification for a proper Windows PC.

Last place! In terms of work units. Probably will be dropping out later today, but needed to stress test an old computer (with a new GPU) so I figured why not.

I wonder whether the server determines what your capabilities are and doles out WUs that your machine can knock out.
Because reasons, it looks like I’ll be installing a whopper of a GPU in my machine soon. I don’t really need it all, but it’ll be fun to see what it does for my folding numbers.

I thought I had a halfway decent amount of processing power, but I’m getting dusted. I think I’ll be applying a significant GPU upgrade because reasons, and we’ll see what that does for my statistics.

My GPU is currently sitting idle because there aren’t available work units for it? Pity since that was the main thing I wanted to stress test, but it did do one overnight.

I’ve read comments to the effect that the server dishing out the work cannot keep up. I know that in my case, the machine has been kept more consistently busy the longer I’ve been at it. I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this to you specifically yet, but because reasons, I’m going to be applying a substantial GPU upgrade to my own machine. BTW, reasons <> gaming... Zero time for that.

It can take a while for the server to dish you out some work. Also, and this is key, when you are using the computer, the folding can slow it down. So when you need to use the computer, you can go to the control and slide the power over to Light . You can also select Only when idle , but I haven’t tried that yet. I’m finding the Light frees up plenty of juice.

Funny enough, this has indirectly caused me to upgrade my cpu. I had been eyeing an upgrade to a Ryzen 3800x from my current 1700. Not having looked at prices in a couple of months, I got on Amazon yesterday and found the a 3900x is currently selling for close what a 3800x was a few months ago, so I clicked. I’ve got a speedy 12 cores/24 threads on the way. At some point this summer I’ll snag a 5700XT and a big, speedy 1440p monitor and make the jump to high refresh rate 1440p sim racing from 1080p.

I bought a retail CPU, so yes, it comes with that cooler. I’m not going to use it, as I run a EVGA 280mm CLC cooler. I’m enjoying the quiet of a watercooled CPU. I’m not 100% sure of my plans for the old cpu. I may offer it up at very, very steep Oppo discount, or I may hang on to it. When I pull the trigger on a 5700XT, I’ve got an old, crappy Dell “gaming” X370 board that I could build another system out of. I’m not sure what I would do with the second system, although I could set it up as a 24/7 folding machine (in a much more modest, non overclocked state), or I’ve played with the idea of building a system of home surveillance cameras from Pi’s, and that would need a server.

I’ve been shutting mine down at night. It would be on during the day normally. When (if) school ever opens back up, I’m going to set up a folding workstation there and leave it running 24/7.

Pi’s? What’s that?
I have a fairly crappy old surveill ance system I’d love to upgrade with POE cameras, but $$ so probably never will. No interest in any of that IOT stuff that invites the Chinese -- or the NSA -- to look into my house. Politicians make such a fuss about privacy and all of that but only a fool would believe that the government doesn’t snoop on whatever, whenever they want to.

Actually, folding has much, much more to do with GPU capability than CPU. I don’t know if he’s running stock or not, but my very overclocked 1700 is running not too far off stock 2700x benchmarks, albeit without the 2000 series increased ipc, cache and whatnot. When it comes to GPU, he’s running way more GPU than I could justify spending on. I don’t make enough money as a public employee is justify the investment in 4K, high-refresh rate sim racing.

Couple them with a camera module and your own server to store video, and you’ve got a brew your own system without many of the concerns you mentioned.

Well, my Vega Frontier is based on old architecture. The latest gen out of AMD has new tech that the Vega and Radeon VII doesn’t have (and hence why AMD discontinued those GPUs). Also, the Vega Frontier’s MSRP is $1,000, while the Radeon VII is $600. The latter is basically an updated Vega Frontier.
The only thing my GPU has over all the others on the market is
memory
capacity, not processing speed. If I were you, I’d look at the Radeon RX 5700 XT series.
P.S. Yes, I am running everything at stock clocks. I did experiment running the GPU at a higher fan speed to reduce the amount of processor throttling it experiences due to heat.

If you’re waiting til’ the summer, then hold off for a bit. The next-gen AMD GPU’s are coming out in that timeframe. Also I heard from my friend just now that the 5700XT is experiencing severe driver issues that have turned people to nVidia.

I’ve been on the AMD team long enough to be used to the driver issues. My understanding is the next-gen coming out are a high-end series architecture aimed at the Radeon VII market, which is more than I’m willing to spend on GPUs. If big, speedy 4K monitors come down significantly in price someday, that could change.
facw

04/12/2020 at 13:40 | 0 |
Yeah, I can’t speak to driver issues, haven’t had any problems with the 5500XT in my HTPC, but if you are spending that much on a card, it seems like it’s at least worth waiting to see what the new stuff is like, especially since the new cards are likely to be quite similar to what goes into the new xbox and Playstation.
NKato

Look at it this way: If you invest early in the next-gen architecture, you’ll be set for the next 8 years...no GPU upgrades for a long time . And it is likely that 4k monitors will drop significantly in that time frame.
