My i7 added a grand total of... 220
My CPU is slowly plugging away and should finish its WU in ~8 hours
Seems like my PC is making a hell of a lot of noise while not accomplishing much.

i7 4770k
GPU is a GTX 760
I’ve been putting off a GPU upgrade for a long time... it’s passable for most games but struggles with higher detail, especially on newer games.
Also, I should have said that my GPU is going to take about ~8 hours. The program can’t even find a WU for my CPU to complete so it’s been doing nothing since it submitted that first (and only) WU.

I haven’t completed 10 work units yet, so I’m not getting any bonus points and just base credit. My contribution should start getting a lot bigger in terms of points later today.

Nice, I'm hunting for a good deal to upgrade my 780ti, the 3gb of vmem is holding me back at 1440p.

It has been a pretty deeply impressive CPU. As prices keep dropping, someday soon I’ll snag a new 7 3800x and drop it in my X470 board.

As is, my rig rocks for high-refresh sim racing at 1080p. My plan is sometime this summer is to upgrade to 3800X, 5700XT and grab a 1440p high refresh monitor to make the jump to 1440p.

Better to read the book. You'll likely still need to reread passages to wrap your head around what's going on.

I read Dune for the first time last year, and yes, it is a book that requires dedicated, thoughtful reading. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. I thought the book was extraordinary. It’s just not a book you can pick up and put down, reading in short stints. Those who give it their full attention will be rewarded.

I only included it for the “We have just folded space from Ix” line. That’s how people in the Dune universe move about the galaxy, by folding space.

Creature tesseracts in remotely and talks to the dude through early 20th century bathroom plumbing. Was Dune the book with the blood sucking Gribs?

No, the bloodsucker gryb was in War Against the Rull , by AE van Vogt. The book is actually a combination of various short stories, which is why it seems a bit disjointed, especially at the end. I bought you a copy of it years ago, and it’s on the shelf in your living room. Or at least it was the last time I was there.

It might take a while though, with COVID disrupting supply lines. SSD and RAM prices for example went through the roof lately.

I spoke too soon. This thread lead me to take a peak on Amazon. Last I looked 3800x were around $380 and around $500 for the 3900x . I saw that the 3900x dropped to $430, so I clicked. It should be here on Wednesday along with some Artic MX-4 paste. I shouldn’t need another CPU upgrade for awhile.

Which board do you have? I heard most 300-series boards don’t have VRMs strong enough for the 3900X.

I’ve got an MSI X470 M7 AC. It should be plenty robust. The 1700 originally came from a Dell gaming system I got for cheap with a shitty Dell X370 board. After I while I upgraded to my current build, and I bought a high-end X470 board specifically with the idea of going to a 3000 series cpu down the road.

I went ahead and watched it last night. I had it on the DVR from a couple of years ago, sadly with commercials, but I could skip them. Yes, the look of the film is exquisite. Having read the book, it was interesting to see where they had compressed things. Kind of makes me want to read the book again.

If you compare the look of this film to the look of the Star Trek film - Veeger - the latter comes up wanting much.
Dune has its flaws but wow, what an experience. We’re not very far into it yet because Missus fell asleep early. We paused after our introduction to the barron. What a scene.
That scene with the navigator and the empe ror, with the vacuum cleaners and the costumes and the steam punk props, wow. In particular, the acolyte who speaks to the emperor through the translation device; he nails that bit part.
At the same time... There are dozens and hundreds of middle aged actors and extras in soldiers’ suits and many of them do not look very soldierly. And there’s some rather poor green screen...
But in all, visually stunning and creative.

Mrs. Ttyymmnn and I are working our way through all the Star Trek movies in the order they were released. Watching it again, I didn’t think the first ST movie was as bad as people say it is. It’s solid science fiction, even if the pacing is a bit slow. And the effects were fine, though I think it might have been touched up in later years.

The costumes are beyond dreadful and they made everything very dark.
