For deliciousness!

Kinja'd!!!

I just hope I can keep my neighbors at a safe distance once my backyard looks like a Cheech and Chong movie.

7# pork butt, full rack of baby backs, and a dozen chicken legs all at the same time. #PromoteDiversity

(And no, I’m not a caveman...sautéed broccolini and roasted potatoes with  Brussels Sprouts and asparagus are coming later. Delivering half of this to my parents who are mostly homebound these days...)

All of you have convinced me to buy a smoker. Any recommendations?

A caveman would eat vegetables

A man of civilization would eat milled grain.

I would highly recommend a Green Mountain pellet grill. I was looking at either a gas grill or a G reen Egg, but I asked my friend who runs a BBQ catering business what he recommended the GM because that’s what he uses at home. I’ve had it 2 years now and love it.

Anyways, the reason I recommend this is its a true dual purpose machine - grill or smoker. It runs on wood pellets and you can get different “ flavors” (hickory, mesquite, etc). Internally it has a heat diffuser tray that you can move - one way opens up holes to allow more direct heat, the other way closes them up for less direct heat and more smoke. Its microprocessor controlled and even has WiFi. You can link it to a phone app and build grilling profiles - for example I do my steaks at 150F for 25 mintes, then run up to 375F for 7 minutes on one side, then 5 on the other. This is all automated, my phone alerts me each step of the way, all I have to do is go flip. It also has a meat thermometer that plugs in so you can get grill temp and meat temp.

Or you can forego the app and use local control and do it manually. Its really kind of a do it all machine.

The downsides are price - mine set me back close to $1,000 I think. I priced out pellets vs propane and its actually pretty close in terms of price per hour, but because I can slow smoke stuff now I am probably using more wood than I would propane. It requires a bit more maintenance than a gas grill or similar - about every bag of pellets you need to open or up, vacuum the ash out of the firebox, and wipe down/clean the other surfaces. It can be a bit finicky to put back together - you need to positions the heat diffusers just right so the thermal probe reads correctly, otherwise it gets erratic.  Still, to me at least, its worth it.

Both Char Broil and Masterbuilt make pretty good electric smokers for people who don’t like cooking hassles. If you get lucky in the off-season they’re about $100, but full retail is $150-$200.

That pork butt has a digital thermometer in it, so once the inside reaches 205, the whole thing cuts back to “warm” so I don’t overdo it.

Electric smokers are truly amazing. If you’re hardcore and have the funds, Traeger pellet grills. But those are a lot more work, too. It’s all a tradeoff.

I trade my milled grain for weapons so I can get anything I want to eat.

Weber great smokey mountain. Couldn’t be simpler for real wood and charcoal flavor.
