Hi everyone: I created a change.org petition to ask states to allow leisure driving as an acceptable recreational activity during shelter-in-place orders. Some states, like Michigan, have said leisure driving is not an acceptable recreational activity, which is bull. Sign the petition if you agree.

Thanks.

I think you mean you were on a beer run.

You want to clog up the workings of a government to address a petition to allow people who have been told to shelter in place and only go out for exercise and essential shopping to go for a “leisure drive?” That’s goofy on a couple of levels.
What happens when you, the asymptomatic carrier, is on a leisure drive and a tree falls into the road and you swerve and crash? The police come and make direct contact with you. The paramedics come in direct contact, the ambulance is in direct contact, the ER staff is in direct contact. And the bed they need for you is now unavailable for a person with the virus, the exact thing all hospitals and local and federal agencies are trying to avoid. All of these people potentially exposed because instead of staying at home, as directed, you went for a harmless, socially distanced drive.
Stay home. Read a book.

I might drive the fintail tomorrow - it is “essential” that I drive the old dear now and then to keep systems functioning.
I don’t think WA is enforcing anything like that anyway, not with how many drivers I see out there who seem to be aimlessly bumbling around with nowhere to go and all day to get there.

No.

Wouldnt it make more sense to have citizens within one of those states petition their own state? This seems too broad to be relevant, my state already allows leisure driving, and politicians in a different state have no obligation to listen to me

I’m not feeling it. I know some states specifically include driving for pleasure as allowed, and lots of folks seem to be doing #socialdistancingdrives, but I don’t feel right about it. I’m just thankful to still have a job to drive to when so many don’t, and d riving for fun feels like an affront to humanity right now. Even driving a “fun” car to that job feels wrong. . I’m more than happy to commute in the beater, the fun car has been in the garage for a month and will stay there until people can breathe again. Cars can wait.

Right - technically not ok out here either but I’d bet 15-20% of the folks on the road I’ve seen in the last couple weeks have been folks out for a drive. I just take the “long way” to the grocery store....

Eh. There are always risks. We can talk ourselves out of doing anything if we tried hard enough. You went to the store just for TP when you had newspaper around by making a trip just for that you got hit by someone running a stop sign then the ER Dr coughed and now your mom died. What no....
Life is full of calculated risks. The chances of what you discussed are low enough. I am supportive of it.

“not with how many drivers I see out there who seem to be aimlessly bumbling around with nowhere to go and all day to get there.”
Um, are you talking about before or after the pandemic started?

Both. But really, it seems even dumber now. Illegal and also often simply foolish U-turns everywhere, going 5-10 under for no discernible reason, no turn signal use, last second decisions, phone distractions.
So yeah like normal I guess.

I understand the reasoning there, but it might not be any different for people on foot.
I’ve been logging a few miles a day while jogging or walking. What if I trip and fall and injure myself? Get bit by a dog? Get h it by a car (big risk here in entitled luxo-SUV land)?

Leisure driving is not a crime!

My guess is the likelihood of you injuring yourself walking is less than that of you driving.

I guess I’d need to see stats. With most insurers now offering partial premium refunds, vehicle incidents must also be sharply lower, as that industry doesn’t usually react in such a manner.
