Dave Matthews was always a huge fan. I learned of John Prine through him, among others (like David Gray, who is mainly known in the US because Dave Matthews helped him get US distribution and had him open a bunch of shows)

I didn't know this but always enjoyed Dave Matthews. Thanks

I believe he’s still covering Angel from Montgomery even on his recent tours. There’s a ton on YouTube, but as usual it’s mostly crappy fan shots :)
I’ve been a Dave fan since the mid/late-90s, I still think they’re incredible. If you’re looking for a single non-studio album, the Central Park Concert is pretty solid. Their live stuff tends to be a lot better than the studio work.

I saw him live back in Texas. Amazing, great rendition of big by Peter Gabriel to cap off the night.

I thought it sounded weird and forced and in the complete wrong octave and too poppy. But I didn’t like the Brandi Carlisle cover from yesterday either.
This is probably the hardest I have ever taken the death of someone I didn’t know. I grew up singing his songs at a hippie summer camp and singing them all through high school and college. I saw him probably 15 times and spoke to him twice, once when he came to town and I sat front row center two nights in a row. O n the second night, as he tuned his guitar before the set , he looked down at me and said “ nice to see you again, you must know somebody.” Truth was I did know the owner of the venue and after the show I got to shoo t a game a pool with John Prine. Not something he would ever remember, but a highlight of my life.
I have gotten more notes from more old friends as a result of his death than I have over any other. His songs were so humble and true and on the nose. Always a bit if levity amongst the tragedy. I still catch my breath every time I listen to the song Mexican Home and chuckle at Dear Abby.
I had tickets to his shows the last two times he came through town and I missed them both. I guess I figured I’d catch him the next time he came through. Hope he’s fishing and whistling.
