Update from yesterday
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
We test drove it yesterday. I hate Tiptronic as much as I remember hating Tiptronic. The car was decent, rode pretty well, was quiet and we could hold a conversation even with roof down at highway speeds.
But, it’s a 12 year old Audi Convertible with an automatic and my father in law wants $7500. KBB trade in value is $4k-5k. Private party value is $6600-$8900. It went from free to we want to sell it to you for full value.
I guess it’ll continue to sit in the garage without being driven ever. 2000 miles in last 2 years. He had to charge the battery and air the tires just for a test ride, and it needs a wash badly.

Uh oh. He knows what he has.

No low ballers apparently. This car is not going to sell for $7500.

I guess he doesn’t want to sell it. Not worth that.

I’m about the have a similar situation, I bet. My father in law is most likely selling two of his vehicles soon, and I’d want either of them. ‘99 stepside Silverado 4x4, or a mint 1982 Mercedes 230CE (Euro, Gray market) with a manual transmission. I’m sure the Merc will get priced out of my budget, but I’m hopeful the pickup will be attainable. I have no idea about the potential of a family discount. I’d put the odds at 50/50.

FIL has unresolved issues with you. Or he’s doing you a favor.

It went from free to we want to sell it to you for full value.
This is the best reason of all to stay away from it no matter what the car is. A gift is one thing, but financial transactions between family are risky for the potential emotional baggage that comes with them. And negotiating hard on price is a red flag.

I’ve done two car transactions with parents, and it can only go one way:
1. They sell it to you at the “ lowest end of reasonable”
2. You write up docs and exchange money.
Transaction over, no strings attached. So in a way, be glad you didn’t get it free, but I have no idea why he jacked up the price like that.

He’s pissed someone took away his baby girl.

I don’t think he wants to sell it at all.

Nah, he’s just a hoarder and he doesn’t want to sell it. They only have 5 cars for two of them, he can’t reduce those numbers :)

He usually likes me.

Didn’t you mention a car in the family few weeks ago that you like and can’t even ask about because they’d more than likely just give it to you? Was that one of these or something else?
That Benz would be sweet!

Yup. I basically told my wife I didn’t want to buy it anyway. I was interested when it was a gift, but I really didn’t want to spend money on an old Audi.

Because he hates getting rid of stuff. Slight hoarder issues.

Nope, and they wi not even try to sell it. It’ll just sit in the garage until the tires go flat and battery goes empty. Once a year, he’ll get it ready, drive it 4 miles and rinse and repeat.

Nope, not worth it and he doesn’t want to sell.

That’s something else too. ‘07 Tundra out in NC. I honestly feel like that one, if I even said “please let me know when you plan on selling or trading it in” it would show up on a hauler in front of the house.

Get the Benz and the Tundra, it’d make a nice garage with the 4Runner.

That’s what he wants you to think. Like Goodfellas said, the people that come for you come as your friends....

He’s just a hoarder. Can’t stand getting rid of his toys.
