surgeons over here just asked cyclists and bikers to pretty please be extra careful if they have to go two wheeling this weekend
we dont have enough ICU space to patch up broken riders thanks to rona

They are probably seeing a surge in biking injuries as a result of everyone stuck at home getting bored enough to decide to try to go for a ride on that bike that has been in the basement for 10+ years.

People also probably didn’t bother to fix their bikes before going riding, or even wear a helmet for that matter. My brakes were completely shot when I dug my bike out after only a year and the handlebar keeps getting loose and spinning in my hand. Scary.

This is why I do my cycling in a 1.5 mile loop around my house at night for now. The nearby trails are too busy after work to maintain distance , and all kinds of wobbly folk are on the road from morning to sunset , using way to much of the road, so nei gh borhood night rides by myself are safest. I’m well lit, no traffic, no pedestrians or other bikes out. Just cranking out laps. OH GOD THAT MEANS I RIDE CRIT NOW NOOOOOO

Bicycling was keeping me sane. I just blew my last tube over some train tracks. I’m counting the hours until the replacements I ordered get here.

My wife and I had a similar conversation last week. She took Rocky (one of our our dogs ) for a walk. While on the walk, s he raised her hand to answer the phone and accidentally pulled on the leash . Rocky interpreted it as “let’s go right” and took a right-turn in front of her. She went down like a sack of potatoes. Her injuries were minor - two bruised hands, two bruised knees, and one serious scrape on one knee. We’re keeping things cleaned up and bandaged, but if the knee gets infected, we may have some issues to deal with.
Of course, she’s not walking with Rocky any more.

Baltimore requested that people stop shooting each other for the same reason. I haven’t heard if it’s worked, but I think crime is down in general with people off the streets.

I’ve been building trails on my land, but that means that each trail is progressively harder than the one before. But I am making ride-arounds for any hard parts, so the kids can do them too. At some point they’ll get too technical for the kids, but they’re unlikely to be fast, so not too risky... right?

I’ve heard that during these times a person already in a life threatening position is much more likely to die. The figure quoted in the study was 2x . I wouldn’t want to have a heart attack in New York right now.

This is actually a major topic across Europe. The pro’s have resigned themselves to riding a trainer and abstaining from any mention of riding outside even if their country allows it. Which most do not. The act of gearing down from that high a level is challenging.
It’s however the amateur riders who are a major concern both in numbers and uninhibited behaviors. Particularly where it deals with the spread of this virus.
Did you see the trials moto video I posted of a pro riding in his house a few weeks back? Everyone used to being outdoors at hard labor is needing to get resourceful over there.

The death rate in Chicago. Plummeting .
That city really needs something akin to the mid 80's NYC cleanup. People are not in a good place.

That’s a dream! I’d much rather fall on my own dirt than the road, or miles out into our trail system with no road access. Especially with the ride-arounds, I’d say you’re fine. I won’t be sending any jumps on the mtb for a little while, that’s for sure. I just got my jump/pump track bike back together too, but the bike park is closed. I figure it’s better to turn road miles by myself close to home than give up and atrophy. Might even get stronger and faster! Need to pedal for mental health as much as anything.

You could always try out Zwift. I was doing well with it until I stopped traveling. I think I finally have a good place to get the trainer set up in the house and plan to get back on the bike tonight.

I saw two older people out on an insanely busy road here, riding against traffic, with their bike helmets on their heads but unclipped. Poster children for the warning.

I just found out that a long-time friend is in the hospital. He was due to start chemo but they discovered his liver his failing, so they’re trying to prop that up enough for the chemo.
His wife and family can’t visit him. He’s basically sitting there alone, knowing there’s a good chance he’s going to die soon.
These are not good times.

I’ve heard about that but never tried it. I hate trainers with the fire of a thousand suns, I spent a lot of time on one recovering from back surgery before I was cleared to ride road or trails again and hated every minute . No scenery change, no bike handling , no fresh air. I also don’t have a good place in the house to set one up, or where I can make noise once the kids are asleep. My little route works pretty well, I just blast out at least 10 miles as fast as possible between the kids’ bedtime and dinner. It’s a perfect rectangl e with a little climbing, a little sprinting, a little fast descent with speed bump jumps and 90 degree corners in every lap . I’ve found it’s a fun challenge on my all ‘rounder cross bike, racing no one but my own Strava times .
Glad you’re getting back on the bike!

Very s orry to hear that.
A close aquantance of 20 years was diagnosed with lymphoma 2 years ago. 2 days ago he was sent home to say goodbye to his family. I t’s just his time. Because of Cororavirus though I won’t be able see him and hundreds won’t be able to pay their respects and share the good times had with him .
It a ffects everything. Horrible times.

T hanks! I bought my trainer a long time ago, but it never saw much use. Zwift uses the smart functions to adjust the resistance to reflect either the workout you selected or the virtual terrain you’re riding on. Get connected with someone else and the race is on!
It really is more fun than I expected. I’ve tried riding the roads around here, but it’s just too dangerous for my taste. Most of the roads have deep ditches and no shoulders to escape to or let traffic pass. I’m forced to take the lane and that really pisses off the locals. On one road ride, I had a volunteer fireman pull up behind me and blare his siren to get me to move. He wasn’t on his way to an emergency. He was just being an ass.

So, I should totally go fly my paramotor then. Absolutely no way to get injured up in the sky, there’s nothing to hit!

Sounds no fun to ride with no shoulder, I suppose I’m lucky in that was as most of the roads around here at least have some lane. And it’s a pretty cyclist friendly place, roadrage stories are rare. Some close calls and assholes, but it’s not the norm at all. Sorry to hear you have to deal with such things, that’s definitely a point in the trainer’s favor. I’d rather ride dirt than road, but with distancing difficult on trails now and lots of recent rain, it’s not the right thing to do for me. Hope tonight’s session goes well for you, I’m hoping to get mine in too.

Oooh, making my own pump track would be awesome, but probably would require more dirt work than I’m willing to do by hand.
I mean, I went off plenty of jumps on my mt bike last weekend, but not big ones, really. I guess everything is a calculated risk... what seems risky to one person may not seem risky to another...

Definitely needs a mini-Ex, it’s a LOT of dirt to move. But if you plan it out and rent one you could get the big dirt moved and hand-finish it.
I suck at jumps, but there’s d efinitely an acceptable level of risk. L ittle sends here and there, yes. Doubles, no. There’s a solid downhill jump line that I like to finish my ride out of the nearby state park on, and you can really boot it if you want, long sight lines and landings, but I won’t be doing that for awhile. I’ll settle for the occasional liftoff on waterbars for now. Th e main thing is keeping the legs in shape, no sitting around through this. Ride safe!
