Volkswagen IRVW Futura (c1989)
Concept presented as a car we would be driving in 2000.
ignoring the gullwing doors, many of the car’s features, ABS, LCD screen for driver info, proximity radar and direct injection petrol engine are now commonplace.

On the other hand...my 2001 built VW Transporter has none of those things.

So many of these late 80s and 90s concept cars are so generic. You can slap any other badge on the front and it could be the vision of the future for Chrysler/Toyota
/Peugeot/whatever.
It’s still cool
and I love this kind of
stuff, but most of them look the same. Or is it just me?

i haven’t given it much thought to be honest, so you could well be spot on with that assessment

I love cars with that one shape style.

No ABS? No direct injection either?

No ABS... given it’s a turbo diesel then one could argue direct injection but it’s not a common rail (it’s all mechanical).
There is a driver's airbag...

I already expected it was a TDI :)

It’s not just you. Design trends overall were pretty uniform until the early 90s, from wedgy, boxy, and angular to gooey, rounded beans. J Mays and Freeman Thomas were pretty much the standard bearers for reaching back to a company’s own history for design reference. From the AVUS concept, to the TT (concept), to the VW Concept 1 (New Beetle), they really drive the industry to its deep-dive into the retro trend of the late 90s/2000s.

Yeah I’m looking up these guys, thanks for the knowledge bomb.
I had a diecast model of the AVUS concept when it came out, it really stuck with me.

Stuck with me, too. J Mays was the reason I got into car design in the first place. Having him compliment my internship project at Ford was none of the biggest highlights of design school.
On mobile, so I’m not gonna type much, but feel free to keep the convo going.
