I dont know nor care what this cost new, nor do I know nor care what owner paid approximately 4 ? years ago, nor do I care what insurance and fuel cost! But in "approx 20k miles added by seller ( now at only 59k)" this shows about 27k in maintenance/repair since 2017?? Even if you take out tires/brakes, fluid changes..this car has cost this guy $1000/mile in REPAIRS! Insane. Cp at any price!

I think the 01-02 (did S600 exist here for MY 00?) is the ultimate money pit, I know an indy shop that won’t touch them due to a couple being abandoned mid-repair. I think these facelift TT cars are much better - not good, mind you, but better. Low bar.

I like this car on the surface - great color (I had an E55 the same color) and Distronic is rare on examples this old. Condition looks good. But that repair list with constant ABC issues made me laugh. 5 prior owners says something. You’d have to be brave.

Itd be o e thing if you spent that kind of coin on an italian exotic, the difference is the italian would hold its value.

Yep.  When this hits the bottom of its depreciation curve, it’ll stay there for awhile, and you’ll still be paying to keep it going.  The nicest W140s now have a little potential value, but due to their quirks, I don’t know if 220s will fare similar.

A former coworker owns an ‘02 S500. He’s actually had it for 7 years, I’ve even rode in a couple times (truly wonderful way for a passenger to travel). But “money pit” would be a generous assertion. Something is always breaking and he had spent about four times the cost of the vehicle used within four years. He sold two other cars to foot some major repair bill, even...

We had a 30k mile 2016 s 550 last year that stickered for $115 new that nobody would touch for fifty grand. One owner. No accidents, not even a curbed rim. All services done. I can think of loads of worse ways to spend my money, including a boat...

Replace ABC with coilovers! (I’m kidding of course, lots of other stuff to go wrong on these)

That said, I drove one and that V12 is just incredible! So much buttery smooth torque...

Must be in love or delusional (usually goes hand in hand).

Years ago I toyed with the idea of one of these, and found an 02 for sale locally, had something like 27K miles on it, presented as-new.  It drove like a dream - good way to lure people in.  But once I examined the complexity of the suspension and even things like the massaging seats, I backed off, and don’t regret it.

I always see young people from the East Bay driving those with idiotic rims like they made a good decision. You could have a $10k repair on those easy, I think the suspension is magnetic ride or something, a guy near me had an early 2000's big coupe and he had to get rid of it.

From what I know, W222s aren’t bad to own, MB has made huge strides in the past decade when it comes to ease of ownership. But they are maybe overpriced when new, then the free market sets a low value as they age, and maybe the bad rep of old cars hurts resale even more. I’d buy a few year old S-class without much worry (I’d also want a warranty), but they are just so big, and I see so many in boring colors.  No black interiors, please.

I could win a Powerball and not buy a boat.

I believe some people do conversions on these, but as you say, ABC is only one issue.

I think the engine lures people in.  Fun car, but maybe not as a DD.

That warranty would cost a fortune anyone knows these cars become boat anchors for the aspirational owner out of warranty. See audi a8 or anything land rover as well

I’ve seen some miled up W221s out there - I think the post-2010 cars aren’t so bad. Not like a Camry, but for an S-class, as good as it’s ever been. I learned on a W210 E55 that a warranty can be a sound investment, it paid for itself and then free.

I can’t see how anyone would even an issue on an aging A8 or anything Land Rover.

So it looks like MSRP started around 122k, and full NADA add-em-up retail today is around 9500. Itd cost you that for a 3 year warranty on top of that id bet if you could even get one

We’re talking for this W220, right? I wouldn’t try to get a warranty for that either, for the reasons you mentioned. I was thinking about a random 2015 S550 that can now be picked up for about a third of original MSRP.

In 2006, I bought a 2002 E55 with 27K miles on it. Original MSRP ~78K, I paid 28K for it. Bought a warranty for something like $3250 IIRC, and it paid for itself over its 4 year term.

What could be the reserve of this vehicle no matter how well maintained if NADA clean retail is about 9500 with all the adds? Methinks that in a few years this car will have another 20k in deferred maintenance and a set of 24" lexani rims

One can never predict the delusions of an owner.  I can’t imagine it being much more than 10K, these don’t have much real world demand - I think even the Lexani set knows to stay away, save their money for a W221.    This is aimed at a MB enthusiast who is also a masochist.
