I fixed it, basically by myself, but mostly thanks to this Vice Grip Garage video.
She runs just as good as she ever has, and I got to take it around the block.
I’ll keep it fairly short.
The brakes suck, the steering sucks, it’s got way too big of a gear, it’s way too loud, and it has way too much power for said brakes.
And I loved every fucking second of it. I’d not dare take it on the main roads, but just around the neighborhood it’s a total blast.
Also, the shiny “new” (as in I bought them two years ago but the car was broke the entire time ) valve covers

“ The brakes suck, the steering sucks”
Hellooooo, welcome to old American cars! You’ll get used to it, though. I’m a bit lucky in that my Thunderbird came with front disc brakes as standard, so it stops like a modern car, but it still steers and handles like a drunk whale on roller skates. Your Chevelle is very pretty, good luck with it!

Putting a Corvette steering box in my Nova was o ne of the best modifications I did to that car. Disc fronts help a ton too, and kits are prevalent and cheap(ish).
Congrats on the drive! Nothing beats the feeling of driving a car you’ve fixed yourself!

All those problems can be fixed through the aftermarket.
Also: 67 Chevelle is best Chevelle.

Thank you! Yeah, I knew it was going to be like that to drive. The steering, at slow speeds at least, is actually hilarious. There’s so much play.

Heavily agreed. I know they can be, but when it comes to finances, it’s a bit bleak right now. If anything, the Camaro is first in line for parts.

It drives about as well as I’d expect a 53 year old car to, if I’m honest. I’m okay with it, it’s just getting used to it.

Ain’t that the truth! Not only is it manual steering, it might be all original shit, too. I couldn’t say. First and foremost is the Camaro though. This was just because I had the parts and frankly need it to run so I can take it back to my grandfather’s when the Camaro’s fixed.

Beautiful car! I know on 78-87 El Caminos, you can do a steering shaft swap with one from a Jeep Cherokee . I do not know if the same can be said for your generation of Chevelle, but it’s worth looking into. If you could get the parts you need from the ‘yard, it shouldn’t cost too much. Eventually I’m doing this swap on my 79 EC. The steering on it is equally squir rel y.

I haven’t looked into it much. I know the hot ticket on first gen Camaros is an 80s Monte Carlo or IROC box. Honestly it’s probably just something that needs adjustment- It’s a manual steering car.

Adjustment would probably help. IIRC it has a rag joint, though, and if that’s shot, all the adjustment in the world won’t do any good.

This is simultaneously the best thing about old cars and the worst thing about old cars.

I still appreciate it! To be fair, I didn’t actually think it could be that easy.

Absolutely. On side streets where you’re going slow, it makes it absolutely hilarious. On a main road I’d be shitting myself.

You just have to adjust to it. It’s been a million years, but I’ve dailied cars from the mid 60s, and it’s fine.
The car should be able to track straight though - if not the ball joints may need attention.
Have fun - I’m jealous !

Manual steering and brakes?! Add a big block on top of that and you can’t get very much manlier than that.

What year Camaro? Also, what’s that line coming off the intake on the driver’s side up front, under the throttle return spring ? Is that a vacuum line for the advance?

If grandpa doesn’t want it back I’ll be happy to step up. Looks like a very nice car. I’d love to have a 66 or 67 big block C hevelle.

The Camaro is a ‘68. That line is for the mechanical water temp gauge.

It tracks straight for the most part- the play in the steering just makes it easy to accidentally steer it when I don’t mean to. As long as I pay attention it’s perfectly manageable.
When the weather gets more consistent (It was 70 yesterday and the high today is 48) I’ll probably cruise it quite a bit.
