My Lateral arm bushings arrived a few days early, and I tried to tackle R&R this afternoon but had to accept defeat. I’ve been using a basic threaded rod with 2 conveniently sized sockets to remove the trailing arm bushings, but nothing I had was quite the right outer diameter and inner diamter to remove these spherical bushings:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The OD is 38mm and I need something that can fit over the rubber part of that bushing, so inner diameter needs to be like 36mm.

Any advice or ideas? I’ve looked at some professional bushing removal sets in the $50-$80 range and nothing screams “This will work!” also I hate spending money.

Burn it out

The cheapest method is to burn them out then use a hacksaw or Sawzall to cut through the steel bushing sleeve. Once that cut has been made it can be knocked out easily with a chisel and hammer.(since cutting thr ough it provides a relief)

I’ve burned them out before.

Either burn it out, heat the a arm so that the bushing becomes loose (probably will burn the bushing anyways) or the best way is to use a hydraulic press.

I had to buy the HF kit since it is the only one apparently with the correct sized adapters for my Vette. I removed all of mine’s control arm bushings a couple of days back.

A hydraulic press would make this TOO easy. I’d also have to remove the enti re rear knuckle assembly. So looks like I’ m buying a blow torch!

Blow torch it is! I true the whole cut-a-relief trick on the trailing arm bushes but I only had ~1" of saw stroke.

Haha, have at it!

Is removing the knuckle that tough tho? Mines are pretty easy, just 2 ball joints.

I see your question and pose some of my own, is your local part store open? Do they have a loan a tool program? Do they have the tool deaigned for this task? I know the parts stores around me have the tools for this task available to borrow.

Outside a shop press, heat the next best method of bearing removal. If you can justify it, the mini acetylene torch setup from HF ain’t bad for what it is. If not, get a MAP gas torch from a hardware store, as map gas burns a lot hotter than propane.

To make it interesting, see how far you can send a flaming bushing flying when they’re ready to come out of the shell.  If you get the angle right, 20+ feet of flying flaming bushing isn’t out of the question.

go to youtube and enter, “ using a drill to take out rubber bushings”, you basically take about a 3/16 bit and highest speed, force it in where the bit is touching the inside of the steel and the bit drills into the rubber, you walk it around and ‘round pushing as you go and the bit will t ake out enough rubber to eventually make it fall out, i used this trick myself many times

This old LS has 3 different link arms that connect to the rear knuckles (trailing , lateral, and toe arm) , as well as a ball joint, sway bar link, and I’ d have to remov e the calipers. That’ s a whole lot of hell no.
